Stage 1 Report

French cyclist Laurent Desbiens won the first stage of the Midi Libre race from Narbonne here on Tuesday. The 27-year-old Desbiens, second in last year's Tour of Luxembourg, eased away on the final climb to come home alone ahead of Bo Hamburger with Italian Luca Gelfi third. The three had been part of a group who had come together 25 kilometres from the finish, but when Desbiens made his move the remainder were unable to go with him.

The earlier part of the stage had been enlivened by a breakaway including Frenchman Richard Virenque, three time King of the Mountains in the Tour de France, last year's Tour de France champion Bjarne Riis of Denmark and Italian Claudio Chiappucci, competing for the first time since returning from a two week suspension for failing a blood test. The group built up a lead of over four minutes after 122km of the 199km stage but Hamburger's TVM team led the peloton's chase and the breakaways were caught after 155.5km.

Stage 2 Report

Italy's Alberto Elli took the overall lead in the Midi Libre race on Wednesday after the second stage was won by Swiss rider Laurent Dufaux. Dufaux emerged from a breakway group of seven, including Elli, to clinch victory in the 205-kilometre stage from Baraqueville, but it was the Casino rider who was left as the clear leader overall, much to his surprise. "We made our break a long way out but no-one thought we could last until the end," 33-year-old Elli said. "It's a nice surprise for me to have the leader's jersey -- I hope the team can help me keep it."

Hostilities began at a climb located at 50 kms. from the finish, when Frenchman Jacky Durand, who had made a breakaway attempt earlier in the day, attacked and took with him a group of riders. But Durand couldn't hold on to the tempo imposed by his breakaway companions and finished 10 minutes behind the winner.

Elli has an advantage of eight minutes 14 seconds over Dufaux in the overall standings, a margin the Festina rider reckoned was insurmountable. "Casino has a very strong team in this race and I can't see them letting Elli lose the the leader's jersey," said 28-year-old Dufaux. French cyclist Laurent Desbiens, who won Tuesday's first stage, finished 21 minutes 24 seconds behind the leaders Wednesday to languish over 18 minutes behind Elli in seventh place overall.

With the main pack streaming over the line in their wake, overall leader Alberto Elli of Italy remained comfortably in charge of the race, his 8:14 advantage over Swiss rider Laurent Dufaux intact.

Several breakways developed over the course of the tage, but 3km from the finish the main pack regrouped for virtually the first time since the start, leaving Fraser take the day's honours at the front.
