ReportItalian Michele Bartoli (MG) won today the G.P. of Frankfurt (206 kms.), a race in which Dane Bjarne Riis (Telekom), who finished in second place once again gave an exhibition and confirmed his great form. Riis, who on April 26 won the Amstel Gold Race with authority, was one of the main protagonist in Germany. The Telekom rider started the decisive attack. Riis was joined by Bartoli, Swiss Mauro Gianetti and the French Laurent Roux and Pascal Herve. Riis attacked them succesively, but his attempts were in vain.In his fourth and last attempt, at seven kilometers, Riis achieved his objective. Only Bartoli was able to follow him and in the final straightaway took away the victory. In the end Riis paid for his earlier efforts and gave up two seconds on the arrival. In this way Bartoli achieved his fifth win of the season and prevented Telekom from taking the win on the only Classic disputed in Germany. Report from KarenToday we went to Frankfurt for the Henninger Tour. This is a big race for the Pros and all the big teams were there. The Pros start in town, then race about 200km in the hills and then do a few laps on a finishing curcuit in town. WHile they are out, there was a women's race as well as several Jr. categories that raced just on the finishing curcuit. We were definitely the side show. Still, there were lots of crowds and it was a big event so it was fun. They even had a race with 10-12 yr. olds and there were probably 20 kids racing. This is why there are so many good riders in Europe! They all had bikes with the saddle down resting on the top tube and some of them looked like they could still could barely reach the pedals! Our race was 10 laps of a 5 km circuit and there was a 300-400m long hill up to the Start/Finish. The rest of the course was pretty flat. There were supposed to be 60 starters, but it looked like less to me. It was mostly German riders. Carmen and Mari raced for their German team along with Ann Samplonious and a few others. World Champ Barbara Heeb was there. Viola Paulitz was there but somehow missed the start warming up!! The US team was Julie H. and I. Hanke and her team were off at the Tour of Majorca. The Euregio Team (Carmen & Mari's team) was very aggressive. Ann and Mandy Hempel attacked a number of times on the flat sections and the descent. Mari went a few times too. I tried to cover what I could and Barbara and I went hard up the hill pretty much every time and were able to bring back anyone who was off. Barbara never really attacked, but she just went hard for a long time and broke things up. By the halfway point, the lead group was down to 11 riders. With 3 laps to go, Barbara and I made a joint effort to really get away on the climb. We did get a gap with a German rider (Evi Gensheimer, I think). Mari bridged shortly after up but didn't want to work and Evi wasn't doing a whole lot either and we were caught by the end of the lap. At that point, it was pretty clear it was going to be a sprint. I won and Carmen was 2nd. I think it was Evi who was 3rd. Barbara was 4th, Julie was 8th and Mari was 10th. For the first time since we've been here, the sun was shining in Germany and we actually raced in shorts!! After we got back to the base, we watched the men finish on the same circuit we did on EuroSport. It was kind of cool. Part of our race was on too at some point - some people here at the base had seen it. |
