Nothstein loses out to Darryn Hill in World Cup Sprint final

Australian Darryn Hill edged out Marty Nothstein Friday to capture the Men's Olympic Sprint Final during the second day of competition at the World Cup of Cycling.

Hill beat Nothstein, the 1996 Olympic silver medalist, in two consecutive rides out of a best-of-three 200-meter series for the gold medal. Hill broke from the American on the second turn of the rack and outdistanced him down the straightaway. Hill was a former world sprint champion

Hill's winning time was 11:19.

``I knew he would give me a strong race,'' Hill said. ``It was a matter of having enough in me to make a burst at the end. He is a fierce competitor.''

Germany's Eyk Pokomy captured the bronze.

Nothstein had expected a battle with Olympic gold medalist Jens Fielder of Germany, but Fielder withdrew from the competition due to a knee injury sustained during a race in Cali, Colombia, last week.

``(Hill) had better position on me throughout the race,'' Nothstein said. ``I had trouble accelerating. It was a race to the finish line and he was a better man than me tonight.''

In the men's points race final, Canadian Brian Walton took the gold with a total of 28 points in the 90-lap race.

Russia set a new track record of 4:15.38 in the 4K Team Pursuit Final. The United States was second with a time of 4:24.90.

Thirty-one countries were competing in the three-day event, which concludes Saturday evening. This was the first time in five years the United States played host.

The World Cup is a qualifier for the 1997 World Championship, which will be contested in in August in Perth, Australia.
