The car had not respected a stop sign. He needed five stitches above his rigth eye and knee injuries made it impossible for him to compete in the Giro. October 18 1995 During the Milano-Torino semiclassic, while descending at nearly 80km/h from the Pino Torinese, he was hit by a jeep coming in the opposite direction. In the crash he saved his life (miraculously), but broke both the fibia and the tibia of his left leg. He did not reenter in competitions until June 31 1996. May 24 1997 A group of six riders crash into a low brick wall at nearly 85km/h as they are descending from the Valico di Chiunzi. The crash is caused by a grey and white cat, but for Marco it migth as well have been black, as he yet again is infortunate: He gets severely bruised and battered in the fall, but fights his way to the stage finish. Later in the evening doctors find that the biceps muscle of the group of anterior tigh muscles of his left leg and the tensor fasciae latae are swollen. He is forced to quit the Giro. |
