Cali World Track Cup

U.S. cyclist Martin Nothstein won gold medals in pure velocity and the keirin competition at the first round of the Track Cycling World Cup in Cali, Colombia this weekend.

Nothstein beat Germany's Jens Fielder on Sunday to win the keirin competition, a dangerous race in which a group of jostling riders draft behind a motorcycle going 30 mph (48 kms) until 1 1/2 laps remain.

The motorcycle then accelerates and pulls off the track, leaving the riders to sprint for the finish.

Nothstein won the pure velocity sprint competition on Saturday.

In other results, Italy's Antonella Bellutti won two gold medals, and Felicia Ballanger of France set a track record in the women's timed 500 meters.

The competition, which ended Sunday, was the first leg of six events in the Track Cycling Championship scheduled to be held at venues in the United States and elsewhere.
