Raas offers Bartoli a Million (guilders)

Rabobank Manager Jan Raas has offered the top Italian rider Michele Bartoli for one million guilders (about $A700,000). This was announced yesterday during the Giro by Bartoli's team leader Giancarlo Ferretti.

"This is a fantastic contract", Bartoli said. "But i will first discuss it with Feretti. He has taken me to the top. Also, Ferretti has as strong a team as you can get and I may remain with him."

This season Michele Bartoli has already won Luik-Bastenaken-Luik and Rund um den Henniger Turm (GP Frankfurt). The Italian is also the leader in the individual standings in the World Cup and is in third place on the UCI world ranking. He has won 6 times this season. The Raas team is not the only one who is interested in him. Cyrille Guimard of the new French team Cofidis will offer a lot of money to the Italian. Guimard is looking for a top man for next season. He is waiting for the news of Lance Armstrong's battle with cancer. Tony Rominger is in his last year and Maurizio Fondriest is looking like he is going to succumb to a persistent back trouble.

The best classic's rider for the season is not the only Italian rider who is being offered a big contract. Mario Cipollini is being lured y Cyrille Guimard (Cofidis). Voor Cipollini has stated that he willleave Saeco at the end of the season.
