Rolf's Diary Update - Back from Holidays

Zihlschlacht, 10 May 97

So, I've recovered, gotten brown, and motivated again. Brrr, it's so cold here! It was very nice and I met many nice Germans on Cran Canaria (Spain). But now a question to my northern neighbours: Why do you all speak only German abroad and not a single word of Spanish? Why didn't I hear even once "gracias" and only "danke"? And why did I read on the menus only Schnitzel and french fries and never tortillas?

Zihlschlacht, 11 May 97

The beginning is hard! If I had know this before my holiday, I would have stayed home. I creeped up the "Stoss" (my home climb) in 26 minutes, my best time is nearer 18. Admittedly I had a head wind, but already so poor? At least I can only improve from here.

Brian Holm to lead the new Danish Team

It's now official that Bjarne Riis's current Telekom team-mate, 34 year old Brian Holm, will be the captain of the new Danish pro-team "Team Jack & Jones". Also the 24 year old Danish rider Frank Hoj from the Collstrop team (3rd in GP Midtbank) will join the team.

Holm and Hoj are neighbours in Antwerp/Belgium, and Holm has been very interested in having Hoj as team mate. Holm would have stopped his 12 year long career after this season, but since all of his demands - from bicycles to the clothes - has been accepted by "sports director" former amateur WC Alex Pedersen, he has agreed to be the leader of the future Danish pro-team.

The team will at first include about 10-12 riders - most of them of course coming from Denmark. But also a couple of foreign pro-riders has been mentioned, among others the current Rabobank rider Piziks from Latvia. Team Jack & Jones' main purpose for the 97-98 season is to participate in some of next years spring classics.
