Day 3, EDS Track Cycling from the USA

For Immediate Release, May 11, 1997

Contact: Frank Stanley, USCF Communications Manager, (954) 923-7300

American track cycling legend Gil Hatton, of Alburtis, Pa., showed the kids how its done at the final day of the EDS Track Cup 97 Sunday at Brian Piccolo Velodrome.

Hatton (Mrs. Ts-Lexus), led off for the winning Olympic sprint team, which included Shawn Washburn, Kutztown, Pa., and David Bittenbender, Del Mar, Calif., and then showed the form that made him one of the worlds top keirin riders in the 1980s, as he split between Bittenbender and Washburn to take first place in the mens keirin, the final event of the third round of the seven-event EDS Track Cup 97.

Missy Thompson (PowerBar), Colorado Springs, Colo., also became a double winner, as she added the womens match sprint title to the 500 meters crown she won Friday. Thompson was barely tested as she won the match sprint for the second time in three rounds of the EDS Track Cup 97.

Team EDS took top honors in the other two events on the final day as Jen Evans, Austin, Texas, won the womens 3km individual pursuit in an EDS Track Cup 97 record time of three minutes, 59.92 seconds. Her teammates, Chris Carlson, Dallas, Texas, and Ryan Oelkers, New Tripoli, Pa., won the Madison, impressively lapping the field twice.
