Trey Gannon (Team EDS) patiently waited out a delay, then confidently won the mens match sprint competition at day two of the EDS Track Cup 97 at Brian Piccolo Velodrome.

Gannon, of Plano, Texas, beat Shawn Washburn (Tri State Velo), Bethlehem, Pa., in the final, which was delayed by nearly one hour due to crash in the mens points race which sent four riders to the hospital. Its getting better and better each week, Gannon said of his sprinting. He finished second in the previous round of the EDS Track Cup 97.

The crash occurred early in the mens points race as roughly 10 riders went down in the front stretch. Four riders -- Basil Milsal, Oakland, Calif.; Edward Mendez, Cooper City, Fla.; Eric Streckfuss, Plantation, Fla.; and A.J. Smith, St. Petersburg, Fla. -- were taken to a local hospital. Their condition was unknown at press time.

Once the race was re-started, the Cox Atlanta Velo squad showed their strength, with Gordon Konrad, New Orleans, La.; and Tommy Mulkey, Griffin, Ga., finishing one-two ahead of two Team EDS riders. Our team is kind of a composite thing this year, Konrad said. We have guys from all over who are used to riding points races as independents. We really know how to race them opportunistically.

Konrad won five sprints to finish with 31 points to Mulkeys 22.

The Cox Atlanta Velo squad won the men's team pursuit, led by Mulkey and Adam Payne, Newnan, Ga., who will both compete for the United States in this event in the World Track Cup later this month.

Missy Thompson (PowerBar), Colorado Springs, Colo., winner of yesterday's women's 500 meters, led the field into the semifinals of the women's sprint competition, qualifying in a new track record time of 12.12 seconds.

Competition concludes Sunday with the finals of the womens sprint, womens individual pursuit, mens keirin and the Olympic sprint.
