Australian Robbie McEwen in hospital after heavy fall

Robbie McEwen fell heavily in the final moments of the fifth stage in the Four Days of Dunkirk. The Australian rider from the Rabobank team was taken to a hospital in Gravelines. He has broken his right collar bone. The brake was so bad that McEwan must have an operation on Saturday. His upper lip is also very bruised and he has a torn thigh muscle.

The fall happened 3 kilometres from the finish. McEwen was sitting on the wheel of Aart Vierhouten who was riding hard at the front of the peloton, with a continual left wind fanning the bunch. Vierhouten ran into a Belgian car which was parked right on the road and unfortunately there was scarcely any room to avoid it.

He hit the side mirror. McEwen rode into it. His right leg took most of the impact. The Australian was unconscious for a short time. Initially the organisers feared he had a bad head injury.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Englishman Shaun Wallace was a double winner on the opening day of the EDS Track Cup 97 at Brian Piccolo Velodrome.

Wallace, a 1984 and 1992 Olympian, won the 4km mens individual pursuit in a time of 4 minutes, 42.44 seconds, and then followed up minutes later by winning the kilometer time trial in a new EDS Track Cup and Brian Piccolo Velodrome record of one minute, 7.98 seconds.

I didnt kill myself in the pursuit, said Wallace, who won that event by over seven seconds. I had to do two rides back to back and some of these guys were fresh. Its nice to come to a meeting and prove that your training methods are the best and most precise.

He is aiming at the UCI World Track Cup later this month in Trexlertown, Pa., where he trains.

In other action, Missy Thompson (PowerBar) showed a return to form as she impressively won the womens 500 meters. Thompson, 18, of Colorado Springs, Colo., won the event in 38.221 seconds, besting runner-up Shan Rayray (Brandywine BC), of Federal Way, Wash., by 1.109 seconds.

"I needed this", Thompson said.

After winning the womens match sprint at the first round of the EDS Track Cup 97 in San Diego, Calif., in March, Thompson had struggled at the second round in Houston, Texas, last month as well as at an internation competition in Cuba.

One of the countrys top young female sprinters, Thompson won both the 500 meters and match sprint at the Fresca Junior National Championships last year and represented the U.S. at the Junior World Championships in Slovenia.

Elsewhere in opening-day action, Karen Dunne (Chippers), Colorado Springs, Colo., won a tight womens points race, winning the final, double-points sprint to edge Jen Evans (Team EDS), Austin, Texas, 26 to 24.

I actually havent had much confidence in my sprints, Dunne said. Theyve been coming around.

Mark Garrett (Team EDS), Los Angeles, Calif., led the field into the quarterfinals of the mens match sprint, qualifying in a track record time of 10.876 seconds. The mens match sprint tournament concludes Saturday.

The EDS Track Cup 97 is a seven-event national series designed to enhance track cycling in the United States. The event continues through Sunday. Saturdays action begins at 9 a.m., with an evening session beginning at 7:30 p.m.
