World Champion Sprinter to face Court

World cycling champion Darren Hill will face criminal assault charges when he returns home to Perth from the Atlanta Olympics. His lawyer Jeremy Scudds today applied to the Perth Magistrates Court to have Hill's preliminary hearing delayed until after the Olympics in July and August.

The hearing was set for three days starting October 29. A status conference will be held on October 8. Hill has been charged with two counts of unlawful assault causing actual bodily harm outside Perth's Havana nightclub on October 7 last year.

The incident followed Hill's victorious return from Columbia, where he became world sprint champion in September. He and Victorian sprinter Gary Neiwand are tipped as top contenders for gold in their event at Atlanta.
