Darren Smith Classic - Queensland

Darren Smith Classic - May 11-12

Darren Smith was a Brisbane rider who died a few years ago after being hit by a truck as he rode across an expressway exist that the truck happened to be taking. He was one of Australia's brightest hopes and although he was very small in stature, he had one of the most explosive sprints around.

Tim Francis wrote to me after he rode the Darren Smith Classic today.

He said the race was dominated by new road convert Rodney McGee, a former team pursuit rider in the national ream and now with the new Giant-AIS pro team. He climbed Mt Tomewin almost solo, and went on to win in the end in a tight sprint finish with James Cross. 3rd place is unknown.
