Quatre Jours de Dunkerque - France

May 2-7 1995

Stage 1 - 162 kms

As is customary, stage 1 of the Quatre Jours is for the sprinters, and Erik Zabel and Wilfried Nelissen obliged. But only after a break by Richard Virenque 35km from the finish which he was able to hold for 20km. Virenque's break took off as a 100km break by (yes!) 100km-worlds-gold medallist-time-trialler Blaise Chauviere (Mutuelle de Seine-et-Marne) was swept up. Chauviere had got a lead of 6 minutes 60km from the finish but then hit the wall.
