Chris McDonald, USA 40:41 Stage 6 ReportThe sixth stage of the Vuelta a Uruguay was won by the only member of the leading Fenix team that hadn't made a trip to the podium, Gregorio Bare. The finish was a mass sprint into the town of Salto after a relatively uneventful day. The major figures of the Vuelta were taking it easy with all eyes on today's double stage 7: the road race from Paysandu to Fray Bentos (123K) and then the crucial timetrial from Fray Bentos to Mercedes (42K). The overwhelming favorite is Uruguayan timetrial specialist and defending Vuelta champion, Federico Moreira. However, eyes will be following the Caloi pair of Hernandez Quadri and Vuelta a Chile fifth-place finisher, Marcelo Mai.Several US riders figured prominently in the sprint into Salto at the end of Stage 6, especially Cameron Hoffman who finished fifth on the day. There were some small changes in the overall due to sprint bonuses picked up by Sosa and Berti. Stages 7 and 8Colonia, Uruguay Gregorio Bare of the CC Fenix team won his second stage of the Vuelta but the buzz continued to be the masterful performance by Federico Moreira, also of CC Fenix, who pulverized his competition in the previous day's ITT after suffering a scare in the first half of the split 7th stage. The 7th stage was split between a road race in the morning and a long flat ITT in the afternoon. The Brazilians, May and Quadri, took it easy, hoping to contain the speedy Uruguayan Federico Moreria in the afternoon time trial. When a group of 9 riders got away with 50 kilometers to go, the peloton let them go and the differences quickly moved towards double digits. It was then that the peloton began to pick up the pace because one of the nine riders ahead, William Mesa, had become "leader on the road" and this had not been in anyone's plans. While the peloton did eat up a big chunk of the escapee's lead, it wasn't enough as the group of 9 swept across the line over 4 minutes up on the peloton, enough to put Mesa in yellow. Cuba's Ivan Dominguez won the stage while USA rider Kenny Zielinski finished third on the day. In the afternoon time trial Mesa's jersey was taken from him and by a huge margin. Morerira defeated the Brazilian pair of May and Quadri by over 2 minutes, and took the leader jersey as everyone figured that he would. While none of the USA riders finished in the top 10 for the day, Rene Saenz did well and ascended slightly to 21st in the overall and the team moved to 10th out of 19. Today's stage, the ninth of ten, will run 176 kilometers to Trinidad, on the outskirts of Montevideo, and will likely be characterized by a number of sharp attacks as the points jersey is still very much up for grabs.

Stage 9, Ruta 1/54-Trinidad, 176 km:Despite numerous attacks from the Marconi And Caloi teams, and the temporary dropping of two of his CC Fenix teammates to mechanical problems, Uruguayan Federico Moreira moved just one step away from his fifth overall win in the Vuelta a Uruguay. The stage win went to his teammate, Jose Luis Maneiro, who had had to struggle back to the peloton after a broken shifter dropped him out the back. Right after rejoining, he had to endure the Caloi and Marconi attacks which hoped to wrest time away from Moreira in favor of May, Quadri, Mesa, and Asconeguy. There efforts were for naught and today's stage into Montevideo should see the crowning for the fifth time of timetrial specialist Moreira.Results1. Jose Maneiro, CC Fenix, Uru 4.27.40 2.
