The Bendigo and District Cycling Club wound up it's 1996-97 track season
with the Tony McCaig Memorial Club Madison.
New Zealand Point Score Champion Glenn Thompson teamed with Luke Drummond to take out the event. Late withdrawal's from the field,Andrew Stirling, (injury from fall during Bendigo Madison last Sunday), Tim Bennett,(injury from fall during National Madison title) and club champion Ray Turner (illness), forced club officials to re-select the field for the 50km classic. An A grade rider is teamed with a B grade rider in this event and the withdrawal of three A Grade riders gave club officials the opportunity to invite international visitors Glenn Thompson (NZ), Michael Steen-Nielsen (DEN) and Arv Hvam (DEN) to compete in the event and fill the vacant jersey's. Traditionally the field has been made up of only Bendigo Club members. Thompson and Hvam made the most of their invites to be the driving forces behind an early breakaway during the first chase session along with the Brent McCaig - Terry Harrington combination. The three teams combined well to gain a lap’s advantage over the field. Victorian road cyclist of the year Chris White and Jason Weidlich tried valiantly to re-gain the lost lap when they broke clear during the last sprint session and were never headed for the last 50 laps of the race on the 400m track. White and Weidlich won eight consecutive sprints during their solo break but could never make contact with the bunch to take the lap.
