World Cup of Cycling in Allentown

Some of the world's top track cycling teams will gather in Allentown in May for the World Cup of Cycling, event organizers said.

However, the German team _ including Olympic sprint gold medalist Jens Fiedler _ has not yet agreed to attend the three-day event, said Lehigh Valley Velodrome Director Pat McDonough.

McDonough said he's hoping for a rematch between Fiedler and silver medalist Marty Nothstein of the United States. Fiedler beat Nothstein in the best-of-three gold medal round at the Olympics in Atlanta last summer.

The World Cup last was held in the United States in 1992. It is a qualifying event for the World Championships, which will be held in Perth, Australia, this summer.

Countries that have committed teams include Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina and South Africa, organizers said. Also coming are teams from Cuba, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and Poland.
