6:46 PM JALABERT DEVASTATED
Frenchman Laurent Jalabert, who went down with several other riders in
Le Havre, was crushed when he crossed the finish. I suppose that's it
then, he told reporters. Jalabert, finishing some 50 sec after the
pack, dropped down to 8th place overall.
5:50 PM - Italy in Yellow
Italian Ivan Gotti, who rides for Gewiss, donned the yellow jersey
following the 162 km ride across Normandy between Alencon and Le
Havre. So far he's clocked a total time of 16 hr 19 min 6 sec since
the race began on Saturday. Just 1 sec behind is his teammate Bjarne
Riis of Denmark. Spanish rider Melchor Mauri (ONCE) is in third place
in the overall standings.
5:30 PM - Il Magnifico Wins Again
Italian rider Mario Cipollini won the sprint finish in Le Havre,
completing the 162 km ride from Alencon in 3 hr 40 min 23 sec. That
result gave him the best sprinter's green jersey. The Le Havre win was
Cipollini's second stage victory since the race began on Saturday.
German rider Erik Zabel (Telecom-ZG) came in second and Frenchman
Frederic Moncassin of Novell was third.
5:17 PM - Jalabert Crashes in Le Havre
Frenchman Laurent Jalabert, wearing the leader's yellow jersey,
crashed with a group of about seven riders into a guard rail in Le
Havre. He got back on his bike, finishing 50 sec later than the rest
of the pack. Italian Mario Cippolini won the stage.
4:49 PM - Riders Race over the Pont de Normandie
Bracing a strong wind, the racers sped over the longest single
suspension bridge in the world, the Pont de Normandie. The pictures
were spectacular, with the racers whizzing between the graceful
supports that stretched upward like a celestial harp. The pack has
another 27 km to go the finish in Le Havre.
3:59 PM - Simon Falls Behind with his Teammates
Frenchman Francois Simon, who's sporting the best climber's polka dot
jersey, fell back along with two of his teammates in Castorama:
Frenchmen Emmanuel Magnien and Jacky Durand. All three riders are ill.
Commentators say Simon is sure to lose the polka dot jersey by the
finish in Le Havre.
3:47 PM - A Second Breakaway
Frenchman Bruno Thibout of Castorama and Spaniard Francisco Cabello
broke away from the pack in quick pursuit of Yvan Ledanois. Ledanois,
a French rider with Gan, made the first breakaway of the day soon
after the pack set off from Alencon.
3:28 PM - Frenchman Still Out in Front
Yvan Ledanois, who's celebrating his 26th birthday today, was still
out in front as the pack approached the second intermediary sprint at
Livarot. Ledanois of Gan has a 2 to 3 min lead on the rest of the
riders. It seems unlikely, however, that he'll be able to maintain
this advantage.
2:26 PM - Uzbekestan Wins another Sprint
Uzbek rider Djamolidine Aboujaparov won the first intermediary sprint
at Mortree, 25 km from the start in Alencon. That gives him an extra
six bonus points. Frenchman Yvon Ledanois launched an attack and is
now 35 sec ahead of the pack. Ledanois turned 26 today.
1:59 PM - Belgian Rider Crashes
Soon after the riders took off from Alencon heading towards Le Havre,
Belgian rider Hendrik Redant crashed and was rushed to the hospital.
Officials said the 32-year-old racer with the TVM team was suffering
from face injuries.
1:37 PM - The Stage Starts
The riders set off on Wednesday from Alencon heading 162 km towards
the industrial port of Le Havre in Normandy. The skies are clear but
the Normand winds are blowing. Frenchman Laurent Jalabert wears the
coveted leader's jersey, with just an 8 sec advantage over Italian
Ivan Gotti.
10:31 AM - Cyclists Head North to Le Havre
The pack heads out from Alençon around mid-day, on a 162 km course to
the port of Le Havre. Although mostly flat, the stage through lush
Normandy farmland includes a couple hilly stretches, peaking at an
elevation of 410 meters. Despite Gewiss' victory in the team time
trial yesterday, Laurent Jalabert of Once is still sporting the yellow
jersey.
