EDS Track Cup 1997, Major Taylor Velodrome, Indianapolis
Two riders with notable local histories highlighted the
first evening of competition at the EDS Track Cup 97 at Major Taylor
Velodrome.
Karen Dunne (Chippers), former collegiate and national champion while at
Indiana University, won the womens points race in convincing fashion. Dunne,
now of Colorado Springs, Colo., earned points in all but one sprint,
finishing with 24 points to top Nicole Reinhart (Cox Atlanta Velo), Macungie,
Pa., who finished with 18.
"I wouldnt be track racing again if it wasnt for this series," said Dunne,
who competed primarily in road racing in 1996.
She has now won two consecutive points race at the EDS Track Cup 97, making
her one of the favorites for the EDS National Cycling Championships next
month at her home track in Colorado Springs.
Sky Christopherson (EDS National Team) made a triumphiant return to the site
of his first major victory as he won the kilometer time trial with a time of
one minute, 7.899 seconds, a new EDS Track Cup record. Chris Carlson (Team
EDS), Dallas, Texas, was second in 1:08.257.
Christopherson, 21, of Tucson, Ariz., burst onto the national scene in 1995
when he won the national kilometer time trial on the same track, upsetting
two-time Olympic kilometer medalist Erin Hartwell. After failing to make the
1996 U.S. Olympic team, Christopherson went into semi-retirement and started
college. Admitting that he missed the sport, he recently returned. After
winning the event Friday, he accepted his first-place prize from none other
than Hartwell himself.
The nights other winner was Tommy Mulkey (Cox Atlanta Velo), Griffin, Ga.,
who won the mens individual pursuit in a time of four minutes, 50.946
seconds, defeating Mike Tillman (Olympic Club), Santa Monica, Calif., in the
final. Mulkey will try to add to his victory total in the team pursuit and
points race events Saturday.
In other action, top seeds Mark Garrett and Trey Gannon, both of Team EDS,
advanced into the quarterfinals of the mens match sprint. That event
concludes tomorrow.
The EDS Track Cup97, which continues through Sunday, is a seven-round
national series designed to enhance track racing in the United States.
