Twigg takes opening event at EDS Track Cup 1997 in Indianapolis

Two-time Olympian Rebecca Twigg was a quick study Friday during the opening session of the fourth round of the EDS Track Cup 97 at Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis, Ind.

Twigg (Team EDS), of Colorado Springs, Colo., won the womens 500 meters in a Track Cup record time of 37.504 seconds, edging Nicole Reinhart (Cox Atlanta Velo), Macungie, Pa., by a mere .063 seconds.

"Its only the second time Ive done this event," Twigg said. "Youve got to go faster than the pursuit. Im constantly reminding myself of that."

Twigg is a six-time individual pursuit world champion and has won 18 national titles. She will also be competing in the womens match sprint and the individual pursuit, during the three-day competition.

In other action during the opening session, Twiggs teammates, Mark Garrett, Los Angeles, Calif., and Trey Gannon, Plano, Texas, qualified first and second, respectively, in the mens match sprint, and then easily moved into the second round. The second round will be contested tonight.

Also, Tommy Mulkey (Cox Atlanta Velo), Griffin, Ga., qualified first in the mens individual pursuit in a time of four minutes, 44.924 seconds, in hot, muggy mid-day conditions. Mulkey will face Mike Tillman (Olympic Club), Santa Monica, Calif., in tonights final.

Other finals tonight include the womens points race, which will feature the winners from all three previous round of the EDS Track Cup 97 -- Reinhart, Ryan Kelly (Freewheel) and Karen Dunne (Chippers). The latter pair are both from Colorado Springs, Colo. The mens kilometer time trial final will also take place.

Mapei Tour Selections

Mapei-GB has alerted twelve riders from which the final nine will be selected for the Tour. Manager, Giuseppe Saronni abnnounced the following names: Museeuw, Camenzind, Fois, Jaskula, Leysen, Mattan, Nardello, Peeters, Steels, Tafi, Vandenbroucke & Zanini.

Italian Tour Teams

The are four Italian teams that already have their participation assured at the Tour: Gotti & Cipollini's Saeco (6th) which will most certainly bring Olympian Martinello; Bartoli's Mg-Technogym (7th), which will participate mostly as a requirement to participate in the Classics of the second part of the season; Roslotto-ZG Mobili (10th), with Fincato, Gontchenkov & Ferrigato & Team Polti (16th) with Leblanc & Guerini.

Other Possible Tour Teams

There are some teams that still don't know if they will participate in the Tour and must await an invitation by virtue of their ranking. Among those teams there is Pantani's Mercatone Uno (ranked 18), Berzin & Colombo's Batik-Del Monte (20th) and Chiappucci & Zaina's Asics-CGA (22nd). Another team that with all probability will be invited will be Dominquez, Rubiera & 'Chepe' Gonzalez' Kelme-Costablanca (17th), who did so well at the Giro. Some of the other Italian teams that want to get invited: Aki-Safi (23rd), Brescialat-Oyster (24th) & Refin-Mobilvetta (25th).

Circuito di Campi Bizenzio

In the presence of almost 10,000 spectators Francesco Casagrande won the circuito di Campi Bisenzio. The decisive move came from Cipollini at 8km from the finish. Cipollini was in front of Francesco Casagrande, Fabrizio Guidi & Baronti. Casagrande surprised his breakaway companions with an attack, which allowed him to win with no problems. Ivan Gotti was present, but due to physical problems he only rode to 'honor' laps with applause from the public.

Circuito Citte di Firenze

After the five at the Giro, Mario Cipollini has won yesterday at the 14th circuito 'Citte di Firenze'. After several escape attempts, Cipollini attacked and reached the Plaza Repubblica alone.
