Dutch National Road Championship for Elite Men, Meersen, 230.1 km:

The weather today in Limburg was very poor. The championship near the village of Meersen (just north of Maastricht) and near the International Airport started at 12.00 with 46 professionals and 92 amateurs (total 138). Within 5 minutes the rain started to teem down and thousands of litres of water came down. Two hours after start only 50 riders were still on their bikes. Breukink jumped out of the peloton; 20 km before finish Michael Boogerd came to his mate. Breukink let him win (Boogerd was a protected rider of the Rabo-team). Today TVM lost it from Rabo.

The race was on a very flat course, the speed was high right from the start, and after 15 kms the first breakaway started with 15 riders (Rolf Sorensen, Marc s. Jakobsen). Rolf and Marc were very active and stayed in front for more than 200 kms.

In the end they were caught by Riis, Nicholai Bo and Lars Michaelsen. Riis looked exstremley strong but could not get away alone. Rolf was all over him. The final lap was very tactical and Nicholai Bo took advantages of the war between the two big stars.
