Danish National ITT Championships

Denmark, June 27, 1997

Michael Sandstod was the surprice winner of the Danish ITT Championship. The big favorite Bjarne Riis had a puncture, and were only second. Sandstod was riding on his new lotus bike, despite of riding in worse conditions (rain) the number 2 in the pointrace in Manchester won.

Of course Riis was a mega favourite, but he did not retain the title. He played it safe on wet and dangerous roads, on top of that he had a puncture towards the finish. Only a few pros were present.

Michael Holm from Denmark has disputed this interpretation of events. The fact is that he did not play it safe, the roads were dry as it became Riis's turn to ride. He simply didn't have the form to win the race. The puncture was also without influence, he was already 3 seconds behind Sandstod when it happened.

There is no way of denying that Sandstod was the true winner. When Riis had the puncture he was already behind Sandstod. Sandstod also had to race on wet roads, while Riis raced on dry roads.
