An American View

Australian Jay Sweet, of Team AIS-Giant-ZVVZ, shot out of the pack this evening to win the CoreStates Classic - Trenton, the fourth event in the Tour of America in the closest finish of the series so far. At an average speed of nearly 33 miles an hour it was the fastest race to date and the judges had to study the photo finish for almost half an hour before deciding the next three places.

Runner up position was awarded to the rapid Polish rider, Jacek Mickiewicz, MROZ, who finished ahead of New Zealander Julian Dean, Team Shaklee. First placed American rider George Hincapie from Charlotte, NC., came home in fifth place, hoping that a good performance this weekend will help his US Postal Service team clinch a place in this year's Tour de France.

Although the two Italian squads Mapei-GB and Saeco- Cannondale had kept the pace high throughout the race, they ran out of steam in the closing miles. The $2000 first prize went into the coffers of Jay Sweet, already a winner seven times this season, who said afterwards, "It was crazy out there, but my AIS-Giant teammates Jens Voigt and Matt White really worked well for me in the final lap, they are the ones who kept me at the front. This a great race, and it is always good to win in another country."

One of the oldest men in the race 36 year old New Zealander, Graeme Miller, garnered the Saturn Team Work challenge competition after amassing the most points in the lap sprints. He was also nominated the most aggressive rider of the race, after attacking incessantly in the opening stages. Norm Alvis took tenth place to become the new leader of the Tour of America.

All the riders now await the biggest event in the series, the CoreStates USPRO championships, in Philadelphia on Sunday.
