    Italian Roberto Pagnin (ForceSud) broke clear in the last part of the race, holding off the peloton for 60km and building a maximum lead of 2.30. He was caught 10km from the finish, which was on a slight rise.

    Stage 2b Report

    A break soon after the start included among others Laurent Roux, Laurent Jalabert and Stephane Heulot. When it was brought back, a counter-attack took away seven riders: Jalabert, Heulot, Thierry Laurent, Scott Sunderland, Stephane Petilleau, Dirk Baldinger and ???? Garcia which built a break of 1.40 on the peloton.

    Team Polti led the chase from the peloton and the break was caught with 45km to the finish. Jacky Durand immediately counter-attacked taking Laurent Roux with him.
