It is the ZVVZ-Giant-AIS pro team's first race back after a break and we are using it to build back up to race pace after a period of just training. We have team consisting of Matt White, Jay Sweet, Jens Voigt, Thomas Konecny and Brett Dennis.

The Prologue held last night was a hilly 6km time trial in Oberwiesenthal. It was won by Jens Voigt after the fastest rider, Russian Edouard Gritsoun, was penalised 10 seconds for cutting the circuit.

The Australian team rode the 1st stage to defend the Jersey but were unable to do so. The guys still don't have their race legs yet. We will concentrate on a stage win and use this for preparation for the Tour of Denmark. Tobias Steinhouser from Shauff won the stage and took the jersey. Jens lost around 4 minutes.

Stage 2, Dresden - Torgau 196 km:

The news is that Jay Sweet (Australia, ZVVZ-Giant-AIS) has crashed today in the final kilometer and has broken his collar bone. The whole team was on the front making the sprint for Jay into the final kilometer. Jens Voigt lost his front wheel on a sharp corner at around 1 kilometer from the line and crashed. Jay tried to go inside him but also lost his front wheel. It was a pity as he was looking good to win the stage but more so as he will now miss Tour of Denmark. We are now looking into having it pinned tomorrow.

Jay Sweet says he was ready to clean up with only a few hundred metres to go when Voigt fell while leading Sweet for the win in stage 2. Sweet sustained a broken left collarbone to match his right one that has been broken twice before. Jay will be having surgery to join the clean break. He will miss out on the tour of Denmark but will be able to race after that. Voigt lost quite a bit of skin but will be able to continue in the tour.
