Mens World Cup MTB, Cross Country, Vail, Colorado

The young Australian phenonenom, Cadel Evans (Diamondback) has just won the Vail World Cup race. Michael Rasmussen (Trek-Volkswagen) led almost from the beginning (after an opening charge by the French Sunn-Nike riders), but Evans, whom our correspondent Hank Sydor says: "looked to be pacing himself all afternoon", put in a stellar last lap to take the race by 1:36. Rasmussen was actually caught by Jerome Chiotti (GT), but fought back to take the silver position.

Hubert Pallhuber (Diamondback/Tissot) and Pavel Tcherkassov (Diamondback/Tissot) held on to the places that they had started the last lap with - 4th and 5th respectively. World Cup leader Miguel Martinez (Sunn-Nike) finished 6th. Another rider who conserved his energy until the last lap was Canadian Kirk Molday (Marin), who moved up from 11th to 7th, 6:38 behind the winner. Other Canadian finishers: Roland Green (Kona) in 18th, Andreas Hestler (Rocky Mountain, 28th) and Chris Sheppard (Haro, 38th).

Central Districts Junior u/17 Tour

Where might you ask is this? In Adelaide, South Australia is the answer. The One Tree Hill course is in the northern area of the city and is a very demanding course used in the past for the Australian Open Road Championships. It has a very tough hill going back to the start-finish area.

The weather was cool and sunny for the 30th annual Central Districts Cycling Club Junior U/17 Tour. Held over 4 stages with a prologue time trial . This years purse topped $4000. Held on the same course for the up coming Junior Road Nationals at One Tree Hill, South Australia, attracted a strong field from Victoria, Western Australia and NSW. Penrith Panthers Tour winner Gene Bates rode a sensible race for his second big tour win this season.
