Vasseur Not Scared To Speak English

A still plainly delighted Cedric Vasseur spoke to Channel 4 TV's Paul Sherwen after Stage 6 of the Tour, his first day in the yellow jersey. He wasn't scared to respond in English to Sherwen's questions:

"Today every each kilometres every people are crying Cedric, go on Cedric, and this is very fabulous for me because I couldn't imagine what could be a day in a race like that with the yellow jersey. And now I hope to keep it for one or two days more. Yesterday I was very happy to win and to have it and now I want it more."

EDS Track Championships, Olympic Training Center Velodrome, Colorado Springs

Nicole Reinhart, 21, won her first senior national
championship title this evening in the 500 meter time trial at the 1997 EDS
National Cycling Championships. Reinhart (Cox Atlanta Velo), of Macungie,
Pa., was a nine-time junior national champion.

Missy Thompson (PowerBar), Colorado Springs, Colo., was leading the 500 meter event until the final heat in which Reinhart and Jill Gianettoni (Alto Velo), Cupertino, Calif., were paired. Reinhart narrowly defeated Gianettoni by 0.175 seconds.

"Tonight was the fastest Ive ever gone by a second," said Reinhart. "It was a great surprise and Im really excited. Winning tonight takes a lot of pressure off so now I can really have fun. This win makes the rest of the racing so much easier.

"Ive been training hard this year, and I knew I was going really fast. Missy has been turning out some really fast times and I knew it was going to be close."

"Tonights race felt good," said Thompson. "This is my first year as a senior rider and this was the fastest Ive ever gone. But, Nicole and Jill had incredible rides."

Jonas Carney (Shaklee), Asheville, N.C., won the mens kilometer time trial despite nursing an injured hamstring the past two weeks to record his sixth career senior national championship title.

"I thought there was a possibility I could win, but I think I must have surprised a few people," said Carney. "The weird thing was, I felt like I was going really slow. This race is won or lost on the last lap and I was just trying to hold on. This was the most painful event for me ever. I was getting tunnel vision on the last lap. It was really painful. My legs went numb on the last lap.

"I couldnt do a great warm-up because I didn't know how my hamstring would react. Maybe if I had had a better warm-up, I wouldnt have hurt so much."

In other qualifying action, Marty Nothstein (Team EDS), Trexlertown, Pa., recorded the fastest mens 200 meter time of 10.310 seconds to draw the number one seed in the match sprint. Nothstein is the current world keirin champion and Olympic silver medalist in the match sprint. Nothstein has won two World Cup sprint titles this year as he attempts to defend his ranking as the number one male sprinter in the world and will be competing for his ninth senior national championship title in Colorado Springs.

Additionally, Derek Bouchard-Hall (Shaklee), Menlo Park, Calif., defeated defending mens individual pursuit champion Kent Bostick (Shaklee), Corrales, N.M. in the quarterfinals. Bouchard-Hall posted a four minute, 31.770 second time over four kilometers and advanced to the semifinals as the top seed.

Approximately 200 of the nation's best cyclists are competing in the five day event that runs through July 13, at the 7-Eleven Olympic Training Center Velodrome.

Racing resumes Thursday at 9 a.m. (MDT), with the first round of the mens and womens match sprint. The finals in the mens individual pursuit will highlight competition in the evening session.

Day Two:

Christian Vande Velde (Mrs. T's/Lexus), Lemont, Ill., collected his third national championship title tonight by winning the individual pursuit at the 1997 EDS National Cycling Championships.

Vande Velde, 21, is no stranger to the awards podium. He won a title at last year's national championship in the team pursuit. In 1994, he won the points race.

"I was really looking forward to this event," said Vande Velde. "I've done well in the previous two World Cups this season and that gave me confidence to take the title."

Vande Velde's father, John, was a two-time Olympian in cycling, competing in the 1968 and 1972 Games. His sister, Marisa is on the senior national team.

"My dad was a great pursuiter in his day and has been advising me all week," he said.

Vande Velde faced Mike McCarthy ,1988 Olympian and three- time world championship medalist, in the gold medal final.

"The conditions were not ideal tonight--- the wind really came up and pushed us to the limit. I've been riding consistently better than Mike, and it's great to be able to say that I defeated the 1992 World Champion (McCarthy).

Vande Velde will compete in the team pursuit, points race and the madison in competition later this week.

1996 Olympic silver medalist Marty Nothstein advanced tonight to the quarterfinals of the men's sprints. He will race Friday morning.

Racing resumes Friday morning at 9 AM (MDT). Finals in the men's sprint, team pursuit and the paralympic kilometer time trial will be awarded Friday evening.
