Zulfia Zabirova, (RUS) Dream Team ReportNorman Alvis and Karen Kurreck won todays Fresca Invitational, presented by Saturn, and claimed the overall mens and womens titles of the 1997 Tour of America cycling series.Alvis, racing for Team Saturn, broke away and lapped the 100-rider pack to win the 66-mile Fresca Invitational criterium in two hours, eighteen minutes and three seconds. Team Saturns Mike McCarthy outsprinted Navigators Robbie Ventura to take second place. "To win the Fresca Invitational and the Tour of America in front of such a great crowd was a truly awesome experience," said Alvis, who resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado. "The Fresca Invitational is a truly spectacular finale for the Tour of America." Race organizers estimated between 15-20,000 spectators attended the Fresca Invitational, located at Alki Point in West Seattle. Several Northwest men competed in the Fresca Invitational. Kirk Willett (Team Colorado Cyclist) of Pullman, Wash. finished 10th, Tacomas Kenny Williams (Saturn of Bellevue) finished 22nd, and Seattles Ron Schmeer (Rays Boathouse) finished 24th. In the womens race, Tour of America race leader Karen Kurreck (Team Klein) of Cupertino, Calif., outsprinted New Zealands Susy Pryde (Saeco/Timex) at the finish line to take the win. Team Saturns Dede Demet finished third. Several Northwest cyclists raced in the womens 20-mile event. Prosser, Washingtons Suzy Forsyth (Qualmed Saturn) finished seventh, Portlands Stacy Peters (Raleigh) finished in ninth, and Redmonds Candice Ridge (Raleigh) finished 10th. |
