Race Report

Danny Dierckx won his 13th race for the season in Beveren. This interclub competition was is part of the Belgium Cup. During a large lap of 88 kms around the Waasland area, 135 starters went out at a fast pace so that no-one could slacken.

The first attack was good. 15 riders took off and stayed away: Peter Van Hoof, Walter Van den Branden, Jan Verstraeten, Johan Van Nueten, Stijn De Peuter, Eric Torfs, Nico Beresole, Danny Dierckx, Danny Van Looy, Luc Pannekoek, Joeri Van Buggenhout, Mike Milen, Patrick Van Geel, Stephan Grimon and Wim Weyns.

The 15 riders named had a large gap, so that the spectators only had to speculate from this group as to who would win. The answer came in the sprint. This was won by the ex-professional Danny Dierckx.

"I have to thank my team-mate, Danny Van Looy, for this win. He rode a perfect lead out in the sprint for me" declared the winner. "Danny is an ex-prof and knows how to work in the "steel seat" ( translation misses the nice phrase - it means he knows how to sit tough in the sprint) - "He is not as fast as me in the end sprint. He doesn't have any problem in helping me in the sprint."

"Hopefully things are getting better now. In June, I have been sick and had to take anti-biotics. Then I had poor condition. Last week, I rode the Franco-Belge and felt okay. Today I plucked the first fruit in the comeback."
