Final: Collinelli def. Ermenault, 4:20.893 to 4:22.714.
Andrea Collinelli beat Philippe Ermenault for the gold in men's individual pursuit on the Olympic cycling track, where wet weather mixed with another batch of fast times.
Collinelli was clocked in 4 minutes, 20.893 seconds. Ermenault finished in 4:22.714 and Australia's Bradley McGee took the bronze in 4:26.121 in a race staged just after a rainstorm. The rain hit again as the medalists went to the victory stand.
``I cried so much before the ceremony that when I arrived at the podium, the emotion was almost gone,'' Collinelli said.
Ermenault was trying to join compatriot gold-medal winners Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (women's road race) and Florian Rousseau (kilometer time trial).
But he couldn't overcome Collinelli, who broke the world record twice on Wednesday in the qualifications. Collinelli and Ermenault both use the ``Superman'' style introduced by Britain's Graeme Obree, where cyclists extend their arms straight ahead from their crouch.
The race was delayed about one hour by the rain. Once the race got under way, conditions were relatively good, with virtually no wind, and an overcast sky that kept the temperature below 90s Fahrenheit (low 30s Celsius) that prevailed in recent days.
Collinelli, 27, is from Ravenna and races for Coppo Forestale of Rome. He was silver medalist at the 1995 world championships in Bogota, Colombia, and has been a successful racer on the national team for eight years.
