Second Edition News for January 29, 1997


Scrigno-Gaerne

Scrigno along with new co-sponsor Gaerne (athletic shoes) is getting started with their team managed by Bruno Reverberi, 19 riders strong for '97: Paolo Alberati, Massimo Apollonio, Alessio Barbagli, Filippo and Stefano Casagrande, Davide Casarotto, Biagio Conte, Sauro Gallorini, Cristian Gasperoni, the neo- pro Leonardo Guidi, his brother Fabrizio, Nicola Panzeri, Alessandro Petacchi, the other neo-pro Dario Pieri, Sergio Previtali, Mirko Rossato, Francesco Secchiari, Amilcare Tronca and Andrea Vatteroni. Together with team manager Bruno Reverberi will be sport directors, brothers Roberto and Enrico Paolini. The team will irde on Viner bicyles. Their first race of the season will be the Gran Premio Costa degli Etruschi. This year Scrigno-Gaerne will participate in all the World Cup races and plan to participate in the three major stage races: Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta de Espana.

Furlan

Giorgio Furlan (Saeco) is recuperating at the Hospital di Ferrara where today he will undergo surgery to take care of a problem in the left quadricipite femoral which can be traced back to a fall at the 1994 Tour of Romandie. It is expected that Furlan won't be out too long.

Luttenberger

Peter Luttenberger, one of the revelations of 1996, will start the '97 season at the Tour of the Mediterranean from February 12 to the 16: Starting at Beziers and finishing at Marsiglia. The Austrian will be riding for the Dutch Rabobank Team. Last year he won the Tour of Switzerland and finished fifth at the Tour de France.
