Boezewinkel turns pro immediately

Last week I told you that Erik Boezenwinkel was planning to turn pro at the start of the 1998 season. However, after a good result in the Dutch cyclocross championship he will turn pro on Monday for VKS.

The 24 year-old rider from Hooglanderveen was talking last week of a contract for 1998. But Boezenwinkel came fifth in the national title in Zeddam over the weekend. He helped his team mate, Wim de Vos to win the Netherlands Championship. "We have signed a contract for an immediate start" said Hans van Kasteren, director of VKS, "He has done well even without the title".

Six men will go to the World Championships in Munich. The Dutch elite selection: Adri van der Poel, Wim de Vos, Richard Groenendaal, Erik Boezewinkel, Marcel Gerritsen en Marcel Scheffer

National coach Martin van Dijk on Sunday named these six riders for the World which will begin next month in Munich. The Netherlands mave have one extra cyclo-crosser at the championships because Adri van der Poel holds the rainbow jersey (regenboogtrui)

For the neo-amateur competition the selections are Van Dijk Gretinus Gommers, Richard Coehorst, Maarten Nijland, Gerben de Knegt and Raimond Lubberman. The juniors selected are Winand van Geels, Dennis Kools, Roel van Houten and Ereek de Jong. Not known yet: Martijn Loohuis or Henne van Zanten.

Knetemann 2 more years as national coach

Gerrie Knetemann has had his contract as National team coach of the professionals for the KNWU extended for 2 more years. This was announced at Veenendaal on Saturday during the news year's reception. The former world champion has been national coach since 1991.

The KNWU named Ingrid Haringa as the assistant to Piet Hoekstra, the women's national coach. The multi-medal winner at the Olympics will be active on the bike. Also she shall be involved in regional training.

German Uwe Peschel goes to Italian team

The German Uwe Peschel (28) will ride in the coming season for the Italian team, Cantina Tollo. The winner of the bronze medal in the individual time trial at the world championships in Colombia in 1995 has taken a contract for 2 years.
