Summer of Cycling - Australia

Introduction

The Summer of Cycling series which begins next Monday at Victoria's beaches includes homeboys Neil Stephens, Stephen Hodge, Henk Vogels, Patrick Jonker and Robbie McEwen as well as Olympic gold medallist Kathy Watt.

The first race of the series is the Skilled Engineering Bay Classic, a seven-day criterium around the beach resorts, from 8-14 January 96. Competition then turns to the Mt Buller Cup on 20-21 January. It includes a 160km road race from Mt Buller through Mansfield to Jamieson then back up the mountain. Then it's on to Tasmania and the six-day Jayco Tour starting on 23 January.

"Most of the riders who competed in the first two events of the series will race in Tasmania and Australia's Olympic road coach Heiko Salzwedel will be watching the performances of our Olympic squad during the Jayco Tour," said race director John Trevorrow.

Trevorrow said riders would be seeking top form as the final event of the series, the Jayco Tour of Tasmania, was one of only two races that will be used as a guide for Olympic selection for the men's team.

International squads competing include Olympia Dortmund (Germany), ONCE (Spain), and Rabo Bank (Holland and New Zealand).
