Report

Italian Roberto Sgambelluri stole the show with debut victory in the Giro d.Italion Thursday as Russian Pavel Tonkov kept his race lead.

Tonkov was content to finish deep in pack of 93 who raced in 16 seconds after Sgambelluri had outpaced his three co-leaders in the final kilometre of the 210 on the sixth stage from Rieti.

Michele Coppolillo, who was third behind fellow Italian Dario Frigo, was the only one in the leading group to improve among the top 10 overall contenders.

He cut his deficit on Tonkov to 1:49, earning time deduction of four seconds for third place plus his finishing advantage over the main field.

However, the day belonged to Sgambelluri, 23, who moved from his home in the Calabrian ``toe.. of Italy six years ago to Treviso in the north to further his racing career.

``There was no chance of racing with team or finding sponsorship in my region so I had to move,.. said Sgambelluri, who left behind two brothers and two sisters to run the family.s undertaking and furniture business.

He attracted professional teams with his 1996 performances when he finished as the number one under-23 racer in the world and won two silver medals in the under-23 road race and individual time trial world championships at Lugano.

Sgambelluri also won the amateur Giro d.Italia, but turned down the opportunity to join the Banesto team of Spain.s Miguel Indurain.

``He is one of my idols, but I preferred to be with good Italian team, Brescialat...

Tonkov and his Mapei team could afford to allow the four escapees some freedom, but the Russian was unconcerned that Coppolillo, fifth overall, was with them.

``It was not possible to lose the leader.s jersey because we were in control, and other riders had ambitions to win, so their advantage was never allowed to become too great,.. he said.

Friday.s stage to Mondragone on the Tyrrhenian coast has the hallmarks of another victory for Mario Cipollini. Already three stages have fallen to his sprint, but he has lost two key workers in his team.

Gian Matteo Fagnini was eliminated on Tuesday for ``dangerous riding,.. and on Thursday Mario Scire crashed out.
