Report

Italy's Mario Cipollini claimed his third stage victory in the first four days of the Giro d'Italia cycle race on Tuesday.

A day after losing the pink jersey of Giro leader to Russian Pavel Tonkov, the Tuscan bounced back for his 19th Giro stage success.

Compatriot Endrio Leoni was second and Spain's Angel Edo third in a mass finish to the 156-km race from San Marino.

A late bid for victory by Italy's Gabriele Colombo ended in a crash in the streets of Arezzo.

As he swung into a bend, with the chasing field closing, his bike slipped from under him, sending the 1996 winner of the Milan-San Remo classic sliding into the gutter.

Tonkov retained the overall race lead, one second ahead of fellow Russian Yevgeny Berzin.

More

Italian Mario Cipollini, from Team Saeco, was the winner in a sprint, of the fourth stage of the Giro'97, third in his personal count. Mario Cipollini beat Endrio Leoni and Spaniard Angel Edo with a time of 3:57:58. The General Classification doesn't change for the first places and for the second day Russian Pavel Tonkov (Mapei) continues to lead it followed by Eugeni Berzin, at one second and Italian Roberto Petito, at 37. Like on previous days, Mario Cipollini didn't give his rivals any chances, since he was perfectly protected by his team, specially Calcaterra. Only Angel Edo (Kelme) in the beginning bothered Cipollini, but the Spaniard couldn't do anything when Cipo struck, who makes this his 19th stage win in six Giro participations.

The stage was quite active, with an eight rider breakaway, including Berzin. This developed after only six kilometers from the start and it was clear that it wouldn't prosper. But the most important escape would be one that happened at kilometer 69 by Barbagli and Hvastija, which were later joined by Alberati, Fontanelli and Steinhauser. They reached a maximum advantage of 1:12 minutes, but were neutralized with 30 kms. to the finish. After that there was another escape by Dolci and Djvanian and later Bettini, Della Vedova and Gallorini. It didn't prosper and on the final part, Colombo, fifth overall tried but fell while riding alone which cost him more than a minute in reference to the leader. And as mentioned, the Mario Cipollini took the final sprint.
