Stage 13 Report

Swedish racer Glenn Magnusson snatched the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia cycling race on Friday, foiling Italian Mario Cipollini's quest for a record fifth win.

Magnusson opened a gap in the last 300 metres, then looked around before raising his arms in triumph as Mirko Rossato beat compatriot Cipollini for second place in the 145-km stage from Varazze.

Russian Pavel Tonkov, safely tucked away in the massed sprint at the finish, still holds his overall lead of 41 seconds

Glenn Magnusson, Sweden's only representative in this year's Tour of Italy, kept his head while those around him lost their balance on Friday to sprint to victory in the 13th stage of the race. Overall leader Russian Pavel Tonkov kept his pink jersey with some ease, retaining his 41 second advantage over Frenchman Luc Leblanc by finishing in the main pack. However, the Russian rejected suggestions that he had the race wrapped up having led for over a week. "The Cervinia stage on Saturday will show just how well everyone is going. But even after that I won't be celebrating. There is still a time-trial and three mountain stages to go."

The riders maintained a fierce pace for the 150 kilometre stage between Varazze and Cuneo, averaging around 45 kmh, and Magnusson was the lucky beneficiary when Ukrainian Sergei Outschakov fell as he lead the pack round the final bend. The 27-year-old Swede was fastest to respond and comfortably fended off Italians Mirko Rossato amd Mario Cipollini before crossing the finish in 3hrs 25min 04sec."Outschakov fell right in front of me on the final bend," said Cipollini. "I had to slow down and change angle, and Magnusson saw the gap and dived through." Magnusson, who hails from Gothenburg, rides for the relatively unknown Italian team Amore e Vita. He won the second stage of this race last year in Nafpaktos, Greece. "I knew the finish and I was aware that there was a risk there would be fallers because it was slippery," Magnusson said. "This proves my win in Greece last year was no fluke."

The Swedish rider brought a victory to his modest team "Amore e Vita", which carries the name of a Catholic Movement. Ivano Fanini, responsible for the team, gets the Pope to bless the team every year.

There were two falls at Cuneo, on the first time over the finish line, Italian Francesco Frattini, who was alone in front fell after skidding in a curve. Ukranian Uschakov fell during the winding up for the final sprint.

There is nothing left to do. Eugene Berzin has raised the white flag: his Giro is finished. "I haven't had the energy, I haven't been able to hold the wheels of the best. Now I must think about preparing as good as possible for the Tour". To quit for the Russian doesn't mean to go home. "No, I think that I will finish the Giro. I want to ride a beautiful time trial". Berzin is tired, "the problem is that I am not able to stay in the gruppetto". The gruppetto of Tonkov, of Leblanc, of Gotti. So the defeat at Terminillo was not from a hunger crisis? "No it was not only a hunger crisis". Something wrong in the preparation? "I don't know, it is difficulty to say".

Interview with Winner

Swedish rider Glenn Magnusson, from team Amore Vita, looked like a child with a new pair of shows, while he commented that that his victory didn't come as a surprise, since he has lost respect for the king of the sprinters, Italian Mario Cipollini, since last year. "Thhis is a win that I've been looking for since day one and I believe that with a little fortune it would have happened earlier, because even though I admit that Cipollini is very good in sprint finishes, he's not infalible. Since his launcher Fagnini abandoned, the sprints have been more wide open, even if he achieved a first place", he said. The winner said that "now I can retire peacefully, since I don't know if I will make it over the mountains due to a cold. I will watch for the maximum times, since my objective is to win the last stage at Milano". Glenn Magnusson, is a cyclist that was going to play hockey, he admitted that he has offers from important teams from the pelotom, but for now he's comfortable at the modest Amore Vita.
