Stage 10 Report

Mario Cipollini equalled his personal record of four stage wins in a Giro d'Italia when he snatched the 195-km 10th stage by centimetres on Monday.

Cipollini brought his race earnings to more than 40 million lire ($24,000) and matched his 1992 Giro winning run when he held on to cross the line ahead of a fast-finishing Endrio Leoni and Fabio Baldato to complete an Italian 1-2-3.

Pavel Tonkov and his rivals finished in their slipstream in a group of 140, with the Russian maintaining his overall lead of 41 seconds over Luc Leblanc of France.

``This victory had more value because I no longer have the assistance of Gian Matteo Fagnini and Mario Scirea,'' said Cipollini.

Fagnini, eliminated for ``dangerous riding,'' and Scirea who quit through injury, were key workers for the big Italian in massed finishes.

``I hope to score number five at Cuneo on Friday, but I would like to win at Camaiore, because that is close to my home,'' he said.

Victory in Wednesday's circuit race at the Tyrrhenian resort would make Cipollini the 10th most successful stage winner in the Giro's 80 years.

Now he shares 20 Giro victories with Italian Giuseppe Olmo, who in 1936 alone had nine successes, and Spain's Miguel Poblet who competed between 1956 and 1961.

Cipollini and other winners can afford to be generous, but in Sunday's stage their charitable efforts were checked by Giro organisers.

They allowed Spain's Jose Vidal to win a sprint worth 10 million lire, donated by the sponsoring newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Officials were not impressed and annulled the result, donating the cash to an association of former professionals.

``It is a pity and I am sorry about it because we decided to help the smaller teams win something,'' said Cipollini, whose winnings have been boosted by his occupancy of the mauve jersey of most consistent finisher since the race began.

After Monday's stage from Castrovillari, the 158 riders were flying north for Tuesday's official rest day at Camaiore.
