Stage 14 Notes

A day that included the 1,996m Colle della Maddelena, the 2,111m Col de Vars and the 2,361m Col de l'Izoard ended with Pavel Tonkov increasing his lead over Piotr Ugrumov by 18 seconds. Earlier in the day, a four-man break -- Ivan Gotti, Rodolfo Massi (Ceramiche Refin) and Nelson Rodriguez (Glacial-Selle Italia) with Wladimir Belli acting as policeman for team-mate Tonkov -- had built a lead of nearly three minutes on Tonkov, putting Gotti into pink on the road. Gotti concluded the break would not work and eased off and they were first caught by Heinz Imboden (Ceramiche Refin).

Imboden was then pursued by Pascal Richard on the way up the 14-km long Izoard. Eventually Richard went away to solo home over the last 30km with Claudio Chiappucci in hot pursuit on the descent, having overtaken Tonkov's group on the way. Originally with the Tonkov group, Evgeni Berzin slipped back to lose an additional 10 seconds on the race leader.
