Those down to ride included Maurizio Fondriest, Gianni Bugno, Evgeni Berzin, Mauro Gianetti and Claudio Chiappucci. The race was moved forward from its original calendar position of March 31 and will be followed on February 27 by the Giro di Calabria (to February 29 -- Cat 2.4).

This partly fills the gap left by the Semana Siciliana, which for the second year running has failed to materialize -- because of this the UCI will not give it a calendar slot next year.
