Super Prestige Cyclo Cross, Round 7

Diegem, Belgium, December 28, 1997

Report

Veteran Dutch rider Adri van der Poel outsprinted arch-rival and fellow Rabobank rider Richard Groenendaal to take the 7th round of the Superprestige Trophy at Diegem, Belgium. As predicted, the circuit was dry and made for fast racing. Belgians Erwin Vervecken and Sven Nijs and Czech Richard Simunek took off fast from the flag. Groenendaal was always with the pace and put in a blistering attack in the next lap to shell the nearest rider Sven Nijs who was riding in second place at 10 seconds.

Adri van der Poel, World Champion Daniele Pontoni (who was hoping to win here) and a young rider from Belgium Bart Wellens surged past Nijs and mounted the attack on Groenendaal. Wellens was just off the pace at 4th with Groenendaal still leading the race until he had a derailleur failure and had to swap bikes. He lost ground because he had to run to get his replacement bike. He quickly made contact again with van der Poel, Wellens and Pontoni.

Shortly after the two Dutch riders did a one-two on the Belgian and the Italian and left them behind, leaving van der Poel to take the sprint. Pontoni remained strong in third, but Sven Nijs found some more energy and overcame Wellens to take 4th.
