Australian Institute of Sport Support for SalzwedelThe following is an official press release from the Australian Insitute of Sport. The AIS is the government funded body which develops our elite athletics programs. Road cycling is one of the elite programs and track in another. The Australian Sports Commission oversees the entire Institute. The coaches are entrusted with taxpayer funds to maximise the performances of their riders in all the relevant competitions. Clearly, for the track program there are very limited avenues for performance and while the track squad has had notable successes it has also had many significant failures. Charlie Walsh is the Head AIS Track Coach and that program is based in Adelaide. He is also the honorary Australian Track Coach which is a position appointed by Cycling Federation, the national administrative body.Heiko Salzwedel is the Head AIS Road Coach and his program is based in Canberra. He was until his controversial sacking 10 days ago also the Australian Road Coach appointed by Cycling Australia. As a result of the sacking the top road spot is split between Salzwedel at the AIS and Bannan, the Cycling Australia nominee. From my point of view it is not an optimal arrangement. Despite what we might think about the rights and wrongs of the Heiko dismissal, the fact remains he is still in charge of the elite road riders in Australia at all stages until they are deemed to be in "national team" space. It means that the two programs are not inevitably linked and the riders will not have their daily coach with them when they go away for competition. I wonder what Charlie would think if he was excluded from taking the track squad to the Sydney Olympics or Worlds despite having been the "hands on" part of their development throughout the training phase. I imagine he would have serious problems with that. Anyway, here is the Press Release. November 28, 1997 The Australian Institute of Sport today affirmed its support for the men's road cycling coach, Heiko Salzwedel. AIS Director John Boultbee said Salzwedel has made a major contribution to Australian cycling over the past seven years and will continue to contribute to the development of road cycling in Australia. "Heiko has overseen the development of the AIS squad to a professional trade team level on the world stage," Boultbee said. "But the AIS cannot afford to fully fund such a team with taxpayers' money and support from the corporate sector for any such team is vital. Heiko has worked very hard to develop the AIS squad to its current level and international standing." Salzwedel - who was not re-appointed to the honorary position of Australian Road Cycling Coach by Cycling Australia early this week - said that despite his personal disappointment, he will be working closely with the new national coach, Shayne Bannan. "The decision made by Cycling Australia to appoint Shayne Bannan as the National Road Coach will have no effect on my good relationship with Shayne and with my riders who will continue to work with me as the AIS road coach," he said. Mr. Boultbee said Salzwedel has been asked to develop a proposal to have quality Australian trade team racing in Europe in 1999. "The re-establishment of a link from the national and state cycling to professional careers is vital to ensure that Australia has the best possible chances for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games." Mr Boultbee said. Sciandri hit by carMax Sciandri has been hit by a car while out training and sustained a fracture at the base of the skull and several internal injuries. He will take at least three weeks to recover.Dutch Pair dominate Cross Points so farAs far as I know the results of the cyclo-crosses this year the Dutch rider Richard Groenendaal has gained exactly twice as many UCI-points as the number two Adri van der Poel (Neth), respectively 830 and 415 points. They are followed by: 3. Mario de Clercq (Bel) 379 points =4. Beat Wabel (Swi) 319 5. Dieter Runkel (Swi) 319 6. Erwin Vervecken (Bel) 224 7. Paul Herijgers (Bel) 215 8. Danny de Bie (Bel) 212 9. Sven Nijs (Bel) 205 10. R. Schåtti (Swi) 203 and a lot of others.Source: Wim van Rossum Race 6 of Colorado Cyclo Cross RacesIt was sunny and 50 degrees [Bill: What is this in Celsius? Hasn't everyone gone metric yet!]. This race was part of the National Super Cup Series and is a Category 2 UCI race for UCI points. The races were: 10:00am - Senior Men 4-5 10:01am - Jr. Men & Women 11:00am - 35+ Men 11:01am - 45+ Men 12:00am - Senior Men 3 12:01pm - Women (Separate Cat. 4-5) 1:15pm - Open Men A pair of Belgians proved to be less-than-gracious guests at a historic Cyclo-cross Super Cup Sunday in Mead, Colo. For the first time, the race was part of the UCI Cyclo-cross race calendar, encouraging Peter Van Den Abeele (ProFlex) and Pascal Van Riet (Ruisbroek) to travel to the course some 30 miles north of Denver in the shadow of Interstate-25. The Thanksgiving night storm that blanketed the Rocky Mountains and much of Southern Colorado spared this area, where the Denver metroplex gives way to the agricultural country that dominates most of the eastern part of the state. The mostly dry course wrapped around, through and over a motor sports complex, mixing an asphalt dragstrip start-finish with a more traditional cyclo-cross course. Van Den Abeele and Van Riet paced themselves at the start, letting American Pete Webber (Gary Fisher), Mark McCormack (Saturn) and others drive the tempo. At the start of the third lap, the lead group had been whittled to 15 and then to seven after two more laps. The two Belgians then raised the stakes and broke away, leaving Webber, McCormack, Cup leader Dale Knapp (Redline), Jed Fox (Bontrager), Bart Bowen (Saturn) and Greg Randolph (GT) to battle for third. "They just dropped the hammer and blew us off one by one," Webber said. The Belgians facing the 5,000-plus foot altitude, planned to start easy. "We were afraid that if we went off really hard, we couldn’t hold it to the end," Van Den Abeele said. With one lap to go, the two Belgians had a 33-second lead over Webber, who pulled away from the other chasers and rode alone to third place. Van Den Abeele pulled away late in the final lap to take the victory over his countryman. The winners made an impression. "Experience doesn’t do much good when they’re that strong," said Fox, who has as much European cyclo-cross racing under his belt as any American. The very presence of the Belgians was encouraging to the other riders. "It’s history-making for sure," Webber said. "There’s never been a race like this in the U.S. It’s a good indication of where ‘cross is going." Webber’s finish makes him a slight favorite heading into next week’s U.S. National Cyclo-cross Championships at Bear Creek Lake State Park outside Lakewood, Colo. Defending national champion Frank McCormack (Saturn) did not compete in Mead. The 69-rider elite men’s race was the showcase in the fourth stop of the seven-event national Cyclo-cross Super Cup. Cyclo-cross is the fastest-growing discipline among the U.S. cycling events. The event, created by European military messengers, combines riding speed with steeplechase-style skills, as riders are required to dismount and clear barriers at various points along the course. Three other Super Cup events were conducted at the Mead event, which was also the final stop of the six-event Boulder Cyclo-cross Series. Mountain bike pro Alison Dunlap (GT) also stamped herself as the favorite for next week’s nationals by out-sprinting fellow roadie-turned-mountain biker Ruthie Matthes (PowerBar) at the finish line. Dunlap broke away midway through the 45-minute women’s race, but Matthes and Ann Grande (Redline) bridged to join the 1996 Olympian. "I knew I couldn’t drop Ruthie," Dunlap said. Matthes had a slight advantage in some of the technical sections, but Dunlap had an edge over the barriers. And an edge in technology. "I definitely had an advantage with a ‘cross bike in the sprint," Dunlap said. Matthes, the national mountain-bike cross-country champion who was competing in only her third cyclo-cross event ever, was aboard a mountain bike. With defending national champion Shari Kain a question mark due to injury, Dunlap would appear to be a slight favorite to shed the tag of ‘best American female cyclist to not own a national title.’ Cyclo-cross Super Cup leader Katie Blincoe (Redline) struggled with the altitude en route to a fifth-place finish. Blincoe will compete in the masters women’s division at next week’s nationals. Defending men’s masters 35+ champion Tim Rutledge (Redline) easily won the masters event, topping Pat Zellar (Cody) by over 30 seconds after Zellar fell just after the pair had received the three laps to go signal. Zellar slipped in the most treacherous part of the course, a muddy section in the shadow of a bridge riders crossed shortly after the start-finish line. Rutledge said he was able to navigate the section comfortably after switching to 32cm tires at 60 psi. "I just took it slow and let the front end drift," Rutledge said. Narayon Mahon (Redline) easily defeated a small junior field to all but clinch the Super Cup title and enter nationals as a conditional favorite.
