A.V Jennings Super Race, Saturday, December 7,1996

The worlds greatest promoter Frank Mccaig staged the third running of his Bendigo Super Race, attracting a talented field of riders for this early season classic, which opens the Victorian track cycling season.

Previously run over two nights the Super Race, based on the European six day format, was cut back to one day this year with the loss of past sponsor “Telecom White Pages”. Undaunted the worlds greatest promoter, Frank McCaig, joined forces with A.V Jennings to stage the classic over the one evening.

The last minute withdrawal of race favorites Stephen Pate (rumored glandular fever and iron deficiancy) and Brett Aitken (virus) was a major blow to the event but provided opportunities for other teams, as they battled for points in miss'n'out, point scores, elimination and kierin races, with the grand finale a 50km madison.

Eventual winners were Tony Homan and Troy Clarke who fought back from a nasty crash at the half way mark of the 50 km madison, when during a hand sling change Clarke got his front wheel side-ways and rolled a tire in the process of dragging his partner to the canvas. South Australian Niel Robinson left with nowhere to go tried to bunny- hop his way out of trouble but unfortunately crashed out of the race with leg injuries.

Less than five laps later the race leaders Brent McCaig and Matt Allen, both recently returned from Europe where they were competing in 6-day events, suffered a simmilar fate to Clarke and Homan when they came crashing down during a hand-sling change. Both were up quickly but Allen was forced to ride a smaller bike (mine!!) for several laps whilst running repairs were made to his own bike. Whilst the leaders were off the track Homan also came into the pits to make running repars to his handelbars which were damaged during his fall.

With all repairs made the battle between the two top teams resumed with Clarke and Homan tacking the points in the 10th sprint of the madison to take the race lead from McCaig and Allen. The margin was extended when Homan won the next sprint with McCaig showing great discomfort from a shoulder injury that made it extremely difficult for him to change with his partner. Allen and McCaig fought on but victory in three of four consecutive sprints to Clarke and Homan ended any hopes of victory.

Mark Roache and Tim Bennett made the only significant attempt of lapping the field on the big 400m track, they stayed clear for about 18 laps and moved into third place with wins in three sprints. Unfortunately their night came to a premature end when they were the third team to crash during a hand sling change which forced both to retire due to injury.

Dylan Boone showed that he will be a rider of the future with a terrific ride to grab third place riding with Rik McCaig who came into this event on limited preparation.
