Yevgeny Berzin to go for the Hour record

Russia's Yevgeny Berzin, winner of the Giro d'Italia in 1994, will try to break Briton Chris Boardman's one hour record next year.

``We have been thinking about it for some time,'' said Berzin's Batik team director Emanuele Bombini on Tuesday. ``We don't know where we will try and set the new record. It should be at the end of August or early September. The attempt will be in two stages, one outdoor and one indoor.''

Boardman set his mark of 56.3759 km in Manchester, England, on September 6.

More on Berzin

Top Russian cyclist Evgeni Berzin is to have a crack at Chris Boardman's world hour record next year, it was announced here on Tuesday.

Berzin, who won the Tour of Italy in 1994, will make one attempt indoors and another in open air during late August or early September, according to Emanuele Bombini, head of the Russian's new team, Batik.

Bombini said: "We've been thinking about it for some time, and now the conditions are right to try it, although we don't know where yet."

Boardman set his latest record in Manchester on September 6, covering 56.375kms. It was the second time the British rider had broken the world mark.

Berzin meanwhile plans to ride the Giro and the Tour de France next year, while Italian teammate Gabriele Colombo, winner of this year's Milan-San Remo, will aim for the world championships.
