Annual Boxing Day Criterium in South Australia
City of Glenelg Criterium
Adelaide, South Australia
Tuesday 26th Dec 1995
40 minutes + 2 laps
1. Patrick Jonker (Once)
2. Corey Sweet (SASI)
3. Damian Lynch (Kilkenny CC)
4. Jay Sweet (AIS)
5. Graham Rootes (Norwood CC)
The seaside City of Glenelg woke to the banter of race commentators
as local and international riders celebrated Boxing Day in the
annual Glenelg Criterium. A perfect day of 26 deg C with a sea
breeze made specatating very pleasant. A full program for all
divisions was provided.
The main event.
An early break on the 600m hotdog circuit saw Patrick Jonker
and Corey Sweet clear from the top heavy field. Jay Sweet and
Damian Lynch attacked the remaining field at half way and
managed to form a gap to former World Champion Brett Aitken
and Graham Rootes. Jay Sweet jumped Lynch in an attempt to
join the leaders alone but was counter attacked strongly by
Jonkers when 10 metres from contact. Corey Sweet sat on
Jonkers wheel until the damage was done. Jay Sweet, unable to
bridge the gap was rejoined by a Lynch to contest 3rd and 4th
placings. Meanwhile Patrick Jonker and Corey Sweet shared=7F
prime sprints. Jonker jumped Sweet out of the tight turn and
finished half a bike in front to win the race. Top road
sprinter Jay sweet seemed to have third place sewn up when he
pulled his left foot early in the sprint to the line. Lynch
held off Sweet by a wheel over the line. Lynch said "I heard a
'click' and an 'expletive' and went and hard as I could".
Young Aprentice coach builder Lynch has been showing
consistantly good form of late. A strong solo finish by Graham
Rootes to finish in the cash in fifth position. =09
RADIO IRELAND ON WWCR
Radio Ireland is relaying in the 60 meter band on 5.065 Mhz at 1000
UTC on Thursdays and in the 25 meter band on 12.160 Mhz at 1930 UTC
on Saturday and Sunday if anybody is interested.
They promise to cover Irish Cycle Racing anytime there is any news.
The station comes in rather well in Eastern Canada on 60 meters,
and you do not have to listen to the rest of the garbage such as
Radio Liberty and Patriot Radio that this station (WorldWide
Christian Radio) piggybacks in support of what it professes to be
its main activity when it renews its broadcasting licence.

No Giro for Indurain
Miguel Indurain has "practically" given up all intentions to ride the Giro
d'Italia 1996. The reason given is the slimmed down Banesto team with not
enough riders for three big tours. (TVE-TXT)
