TOURS DE FRANCE: 1991 to 1995
Five Years Already: A Look Back at Indurain's Five Tours
Can it be five years since American cycling hero Greg Lemond
carried the maillot jaune, the famed yellow leader's jersey, into
Paris for the last time? Indeed it has been that long.
Ever since, Spaniard Miguel Indurain has reigned as the Tour de
France king.
As Miguel lines up to defend his fifth Tour de France title, World
Media Network takes a look back at Indurain's four Tours that have
brought him to the steps of a historic fifth consecutive win.
1991: Long Live the King
Prior to the start, few were picking Indurain for the win.
After years of servitude to then team leader, 1988 Tour winner
Pedro Delgado, Indurain's preparation had remained discreet.
For those accustomed to making calculations from the stopwatch,
Indurain looked to have the potential to become a possible Tour
winner. If the time he lost sacrificing himself for Delgado was
subtracted-at one point he was actually forced to stop and wait
when his ailing leader failed to make a crucial break-Indurain's
estimated time put him on equal ground with three time winner Greg
Lemond. But these calculations could be reduced to a bunch of
"ifs." Miguel had never had the experience of riding with the
leader's yellow jersey, and when he had the responsibility of being
the team's designated leader, such as in that Spring's Tour of
Spain, he had come up short.
Lemond snagged the lead already in the opening week, and looked set
to continue his streak. But in the Pyrénées, so close
to his native Spanish soil, Indurain made his mark. While a young
Luc Leblanc, currently the World Champion, would be the first to
take the yellow jersey off Lemond's shoulders, in the remaining
weeks of racing there would be little doubt as to who would carry
it into Paris, for in both the time trials and the mountains,
Miguel proved the most consistent.
1992: The Year of Confirmation
"It's one thing to win the Tour de France, but it's another thing to
win it as defending champion," warned Greg Lemond prior to the
start of the 1992 Tour. As defending champion all eyes and all
pressure were on Big Mig. If 1991 was a year of Miguel's
revelation, 1992 was his year of confirmation. It would not be
easy. Greg Lemond was happy to finally have the pressure off his
shoulders, and there were plenty of challengers from Indurain's
generation, particularly Italy's Gianni Bugno and Claudio
Chiappucci. Bugno had proven he could go the distance, after
winning his native Tour of Italy from start to finish in 1990.
As the reigning world champion, he appeared the closest threat.
Chiappucci after second place in 1990 and third in 1991 was
becoming increasingly confident that he could be more than a lethal
climber.
For the superstitious, the tour's starting city, San Sebastian,
Spain, only a handful of kilometers from Indurain's home,
represented an omen. This was Miguel's Tour.
The French border could not come fast enough for Lemond who
faltered early on the mid-mountain roads crossing the Basque region
which joins France and Spain. Indurain waited until the Luxembourg
time trial to erase the hopes of all other challengers. Indurain's
1.88 meters and 80 kilo build provided the horsepower needed to
dominated the time trials. Permanently pushing the winning speed to
over 50km/hr, he possesses the Tour record of 52.349 km/hr for the
64 kilometer chrono-effort between Tours and Blois in the closing
week of the 1992 Tour.
1993: The Hat Trick
This year opened the door to a new set of challengers. At the
start, few expected Colombian Alvaro Mejia, Poland's Zenon Jaskula
or Switzerland's Tony Rominger to be Indurain's principal
adversaries. Rominger, fresh off his second Tour of Spain win
proved toughest. Yet at the age of thirty two and with a history of
summer allergies, there was ample reason to doubt the late blooming
Swiss rider. But he won both mountain and time trial stages from
Miguel. Admittedly, Indurain was sick when he bowed to Rominger on
the final time trial.
The others, Mejia, or Jaskula, appeared simply content to be
fighting for a spot on the podium.
While Jaskula took third place, he signed with the modest AKI team
which did not compete in 1994 and will only race again this year.
Mejia was only a shadow of himself in the 1994 Tour and is only now
beginning to show a glimmer of the form which made him an early
revelation.
In 1993 Miguel's still humbled his opponents, but the Tour humbled
him. It was his most exhausting victory and he finished sick. After
arriving on the Champs Elysees, many of the other stars of the
summer made the rounds of the lucrative criterium circuit. But
Miguel stayed home.
1994: State of Grace
Miguel attempted a quick recuperation during the winter. But
sickness and injury still hampered his pre-Tour preparation. Mother
nature looked ready to provide the most serious threat to
Spaniard's fourth title. In his favored preparation race, the Tour
of Italy, brash young Russian Evgeni Berzin made Miguel appear
vulnerable.
But once the Tour started Miguel quickly laid all doubt to rest, In
the first major test, a time trial through the Perigord region of
Southwestern France, he showed that, if anything, the slow start on
the season simply left him fresher and stronger in July. Again
humiliating his opponents, some of his opponents, such as Luc
Leblanc and Richard Virenque were already counting their deficit in
terms of double digits.
When the principal remaining rival Rominger was forced to abandon
mid-way through due to sickness, the path to Paris was clear, and
Miguel rolled down the Champs Elysees with his biggest margin of
victory to date, 5'39 over the late charging Piotr Ugrumov, a
veteran Russian riding for the Gewiss team. So complete was
Indurain's win, so deep was his Banesto team, that the gentle
giant, despite his demeanor void of machismo, appeared to at times
be simply toying with his competition.
1995: On the Steps of History
Indurain faces more challengers than ever before. Yet question
marks hang over each.
Certainly there is Rominger. But for how many years can he be
repackaged as a real threat.
He is coming off an impressive Tour of Italy win. But his three
Tours of Spain never provided him with a sufficient argument come
July. Richard Virenque, the punchy climber for the Festina team was
fourth last year and has made significant progress in his glaring
weakness, the time trial. Still, he resembles too much one time
challenger Claudio Chiappucci, a formidable climber, who, despite
his efforts remained limited in the time trials.
Like Chiappucci, Virenque also seems too content to ride for the
polka dot best climber's jersey rather than the overall
classification's yellow jersey.
The most exciting new challenger may be Evgeni Berzin. At the age
of twenty five, the young Russian is making his Tour debut. In his
final preparation, he finished second in the Tour of Italy. Berzin,
however, has no Tour of France experience, and as any seasoned
veteran knows, the difference between the Tour of Italy and the
Tour of France can often be great.
For anyone inclined to bet, Miguel's odds appear overwhelming. The
champion says his form is above that of a year ago, a scary thought
for his opponents. Indurain's director, the usually modest
Jose;-Miguel Echavarri appears confident," You know, quite
frankly I don't see any one person beating Miguel. I think one day
Miguel will decide that he has had enough.
At the end of one season he will just say "That's it. I've
said what I have to say. I'm finished with cycling." That's how I
see him going out.
1995-1996: Indurain Six
Even as Spanish cycling giant Miguel Indurain stormed to his
legendary fifth consecutive Tour de France victory, he refused to
gloat. Every day, he continued to insist that the race was still
not over. Even on final victory parade into Paris, he refused a
custom bike etched with the number five. Only after he crossed the
finish line, long after putting on the final yellow leader's jersey
and long after handing yet another blue and gold victory cup, did
he did he consent to use it on a victory lap.
The big disappointment of this year's Tour was Swiss rider
Tony Rominger will not contest the Spaniard's supremacy.
For the past three years he has been touted as the principal rival,
and after dominating the Tour of Italy, Rominger's form has never
been better. Yet after his mediocre eighth place, Rominger now
knows he will never win the Tour. At the age of 34, this was his
last chance.
Fortunately for bicycle racing, several strong contenders emerged.
Swiss hopeful Alex Zulle, Dane Bjarne Riis and French
standout Laurent Jalabert, all went down fighting. In the first
time trial, Indurain only pried 12 seconds from Riis. In the first
mountain stage Indurain conceded just two 2':02" to
Zulle.
And during the 12th stage, Jalabert stole 5':41" from the
Spanish master.
But consistency is the key to victory in the Tour de France, and
nobody claims more of it than Indurain. In contrast, all his
contenders have noticeable weaknesses.
Although Jalabert has made enormous progress and placed fourth this
year, . he continues to falter in the time trials. Indurain,
starting two minutes behind, doubled him in the first time test.
At the age of 31, Barne Riis may be facing the Rominger
syndrome. At 27 years old, age is on Alex Zulle's side.
But despite his success in the first mountain stage to La Plagne,
Indurain proved at least his equal at every other critical moment.
Other challengers lurk in the ranks. Italy's appetizing Ivan
Gotti rode an inspired Tour. Only 26, his fifth place finish is a
sure sign of better things to come. Despite his forgettable
performance, 25-year-old Russian Evgeni Berzin remains a fierce
contender. He won the Tour of Italy in 1994, and the Tour de
France is certainly in his legs.
Next year, Indurain will start out as the favorite. But despite
his five successive wins, mighty Mig must fall one year.
