L'Equipe's Film of the Race:

**After a few skirmishes at the beginning of the race, the first escape is
led by Polti team-mates Brasi and Martinelli who lead until km77. They
reach Holme Moss, the principal difficulty of the day, with 6.10 on the
peloton.

**Brasi drops Martinelli on Holme Moss. Behind, prominent at the head of
the peloton are Zulle, Jalabert and Stephens (Once). Already a major
sorting out is in progress, with among those being dropped, numerous riders
of Aubervilliers (Genty, Saugrain, Lebreton, Lesniewski) and Festina
(Moreau, Henry, Martin).

**A counter-attack develops with Jaerman (MG), Lanfranchi (Brescialat),
Totschnig (Polti), Caruso ( ZG) and Bruyneel who first catch Martinelli
then Brasi on the second climb of Holme Moss. [As Peter McNairney notes,
though, and as I saw myself on TV, Bugno, looking very impressive and doing
the pulling, Jalabert and Escartin pulled clear of the peloton ad came up
to the break] but there was a general regrouping [on the steep descent of
Holme Moss -- except of the large number who had been dropped!] and on the
way up the [much easier] climb of Woodhead, with about 70km to go.

**At 160km an escape of five develops: Elli (MG), Caruso (ZG), Moreels
(Lotto), Milesi (Brescialat) and Piziks (Novell) but the pace is too high
for the latter three who are dropped on the way back to Leeds.

**Sciandri takes off alone after [his team-mate] Elli and Caruso at km180
and catches them after a fine pursuit lasting 8km [the good TV coverage in
the UK on Channel 4 showed Sciandri vociferously waving the break down from
a distance, holding up two fingers to Elli to say "there are two of us
now". When they do slow down and he catches up, they are not going fast
enough for him, and Caruso is unceremoniously pushed into second place in
the pace line [by a plainly well-psyched-up Sciandri].

**On the first lap of the finishing circuit (three laps of 8km) the three
leaders are 1.56 ahead. The Mapei team (above all Ballerini and Escartin)
and ONCE (especially Bruyneel and Mauri) try to chase, but with
insufficient conviction). In front by contrast Elli devotes himself to
working for Sciandri.

**In the last of the three laps Sciandri breaks clear leaving Elli to
control Caruso. He wins easily, Caruso getting the poetic justice of second
place. The bunch sprint is taken by Baldato, MG again!, before Museeuw and
Jalabert.

Gianetti Back

After a scary crash in the Tour of Switzerland in which he fractured his no
3 cervical vertebra, Mauro Gianett resumed racing in the open Regio Tour in
Germany yesterday (Sunday 7 August). The race ends on 13 August. Forza
Mauro!

L'Equipe notes that the pros are gradually "deserting" the series (but this
reporter won't -- I've started so I'll finish): most of the Castorama to
the Tour of Burgos, Gan to the Regio Tour in Germany, some Festina to
Burgos, some to the Leeds Classic.

Tour of Burgos

The Tour of Burgos (initially listed in the international calendar for
22-26 August 95) started today (7 August) and finishes 10 August. The
principal contenders are: De Las Cuevas, Desbiens, Magnien, Simon, Marie
(Castorama); Escartin, Della Santa (Mapei); Montoya, Rue, Hampsten,
Miranda, Uriarte (Banesto); Armstrong, Mejia (Motorola); Brochard, Dufaux
(Festina); Cubino, Edo (Kelme); Tchmil (Lotto); Bouwmans (Novell); Riis,
Ugrumov (Gewiss).

The apparently very mountainous race will not be graced with the presence
of Miguel Indurain, who had it on his provisional calendar, but will return
to competition in the Clasica San Sebastian followed by the Tour of Galicia
(14-18 August 95) and the Luis Ocana Trophy (24, 25 August 95). There's no
firm news on his likelihood of riding the Vuelta a Espana, but L'Equipe
suggests he's not that interested.

The '95 Tour of Burgos stages are:
  7 August, Stage 1 Burgos--Roa (177km)
  8 August, Stage 2 Villadiego--Miranda (177km)
  9 August, Stage 3 Miranda--Laguna Negra (summit finish--202km)
 10 August, Stage 4.1 Aquas Santolin--Burgos (70km)
            Stage 4.2 Burgos--Burgos (7.9km ITT)

Lelli Champion...Faute de Mieux?

Massimilano Lelli is the new Italian time trial champion. But most of the
Italian pros cried off. Only four were at the start....
