JULIAN BERRENDERO
Spanish cyclist Julian Berrendero has died in Madrid aged 83, as a result
of a ruptured aortal aneurism. Berrendero was a Spanish pioneer in the Tour
de France, finishing 11th in 1936, taking the climber's jersey. He was the
first Spanish winner of the Vuelta a Espana in 1941 (the inception race in
1935, and that in 1936, having been won by the Belgian G. Deloor with no
race held in 1937--40) and repeated the feat in 1942. He was also Vuelta
King of the Mountains in 1942 and again in 1945. He was Spanish national
road champion in 1942, 1943 and 1944. After retirement Berrendero devoted
his time to his bike shop in Madrid.

4. Tour Feminin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Italian cyclist Fabianna Luperini has been christened The Female
Pantani in the women's Tour de France. She appears on her way to winning
the overall title after already winning the women's Giro earlier this year.
* At the end of stage five and during three mountain stages, Luperini has
climbed to an eight minute, 24sec advantage over Jeannie Longo.
* There were no changes in the overall standings after the fifth stage.
* Comment heard: "She is surrounded by the best female cyclists on the
planet and instead of gaining seconds she gains minutes on them. There are
95 women left in this race (from 110 starters) and on the general
classification all those after 40th place are over an hour behind Luperini
-- and we've only had five stages."
* Only one member of the Australian team has withdrawn so far. Melissa
Berryman was exhausted by the mountains and abandoned on stage four.
Tour Feminin
Are these nicknames really doing the rounds? Or does L'Equipe make them up?
To the nickname "Pantani in petticoats" (Pantani en jupons) has been added
"Little microbe" to the sobriquets applied to Fabiana Luperini, or so the
paper claims. My first thought on hearing the comparison with Pantani was
the irreverent one that the poor woman might be bald; it transpires that
she's merely diminutive and a phenomenal climber.
STRETCHING EXERCISES
The following anecdote is adapted from an entertaining article on the great
soigneurs in the new Cycle Sport.
During the 1954 Tour Louison Bobet took the maillot jaune at Caen and gave
the new jersey to his sister, forgetting that the organizers only gave out
a new one every other day. Bobet's soigneur, fellow Breton Raymond Le Bert,
was faced with the embarrassing prospect of his charge having no jersey to
wear on the next stage, so went to his nearby home to bring a yellow jersey
that Bobet had given him the previous year when he first won the Tour. To
his horror Le Bert found that the jersey had shrunk in the wash, so he
rushed it to a gymnasium where he asked a heavyweight boxer to put it on in
order to stretch it. "It was this very jersey which Bobet wore the next
day."
