Leontien Van Moorsel
Dutch double Tour Feminin winner (1992, 1993) Leontien Van Moorsel, who
among other things also won the 1990 World 3,000m pursuit and the 1991
World road race, has announced her retirement. According to L'Equipe,
despite a clear willingness to resume her career after a period of illness,
Leontien has been unable to overcome a hormonal imbalance which has led her
to be stubbornly 15 kilos overweight and has decided to stop her racing
career.
'95 Tour Feminin Stage 2
US rider Jeanne Golay took the overall lead in the Tour Feminin after the
second stage which finished yesterday (31 July) in Le Sentier in the valley
of Joux in Switzerland, the first time the Tour has travelled outside
France. L'Equipe notes the felicitous nature of Golay's yellow jersey. The
area is, it says "the cradle of several families called Golay. For several
hundred years traces of this widely spread name are to be found in the
local archives, with a wave of departures towards Canada and the US at the
beginning of the century."

Mi-Aout Bretonne etc....
The post-Tour race circuit continues in France with something a bit beyond
a criterium, a series of races in Britanny with an overall points
classification (riders do not have to take part in all the races in the
series to win this classification). The first race in the series was
yesterday (31 July 95) at Plonevez-du-Faou, definitely a "super-criterium"
with 80km on the open road through the hills of the monts d'Arree and then
20 laps of a 5km circuit.
1. ?
2. Pretot (Fr, Gan) +1.16
3. Rinero (Fr, amateur) +1.34
4. Pecisseler (Ger, amateur) +4.34
5. Garel (Fr, Le Groupement**) +4.36
6. Laukka (Fin, Festina) +4.40
7. Trotel (Fr, amateur) +4.53
8. Colotti (Fr, GAN) +14.00
9. Faudot (Fr, amateur)
10. Rouxel (Fr, amateur) same time
**Le Groupement riders will ride in Le Groupement colours until 7 August,
when the team formally folds.
The other races in the series are at Brest today (1 August 95), Lorient (2
Aug), Ploumilliau (4 Aug), Tregunc (5 Aug), Lesneven (6 Aug), Lanester (7
Aug), Auray (9 Aug), Rostrenen (11 Aug), Plerin (12 Aug). Brittany is
something of a bike-watchers' paradise at this time of year, with the
semi-classic GP Ouest-France at Plouay (which the organisers would like to
soon become an alternate World Cup race) on 27 August, and the Tour de
l'Avenir almost entirely inside Brittany early next month.
Meanwhile in criteriums elsewhere in France, Eddy Seigneur (Fr, GAN) won at
Dijon in front of Durand, Bouvard, Jalabert and Tchmil (on Friday 25
July?); Jean-Francois Bernard (Fr, Chazal) won on Saturday (26 July) at
Monein in the Pyrenees-Atlantique with Laurent Jalabert (Fr, ONCE) second
at 8 seconds; and Jalabert, Virenque, Pantani, Chiappucci were racing
yesterday afternoon (31 July) at Castillon-la-Bataille in the Gironde (no
result). Chiappucci was also down for an evening 45km criterium at
Crans-Montana in Switzerland!! -- together with Rominger, Zulle, Indurain,
Richard, Bugno, Bortolami and Berzin. This was to be followed today (the
Swiss national day) by the cyclosportif Rominger Classic in which 3,800
cyclosportifs were to be led in groups of 500 by pairs of pros over 102km
between Vevey and Crans-Montana, the first group being led by Rominger and
Indurain.
