News and Race Reports for 17 August 1995
Motorola's Team Report for the Tour of Galecia
(Vigo, Spain; August 16) After a first stage dominated by five-time Tour de
France winner Miguel Indurain, Motorola's Max Van Heeswijk took charge and
won the 191-kilometer second stage. The twenty-two year old neo-pro found
his legs during the four and a half hour race and narrowly beat ONCE's
Laurent Jalabert to the finish line. The win is made all the more sweet
knowing that Tour de France notables Jalabert, Richard Virenque, Alex
Zulle, and Indurain are all in the ranks of the Galecia's peloton.
Miguel Indurain set the tone for the this year's Galecia when he and
Maarten Den Bakker crossed the first stage's line four minutes ahead of the
nearest competitor. Sometimes criticized for focusing only on the Tour de
France, the enigmatic Indurain proved once again yesterday that he has more
race victories up his sleeve than just the Tour.
This stage at Galecia adds to a growing list of accomplishments in the
Motorola Dutchman's first year in the professional ranks. Stage wins at the
Tours of Austria and Luxembourg & podium appearances at the Tour of Denmark
and Route du Sud all lead to the inevitable conclusion that Motorola's Max
Van Heeswijk is one to watch in the coming years.
With Lance's San Sebastian win and Max's stage at Galecia, the Motorola
Cycling Team is in fine form for the fall races and should be posting good
marks in the coming weeks.
