News and Race Reports for August 16 1995

Luc Leblanc

Luc Leblanc looks set to sign a contract with the new French team La
Francaise des Jeux, managed by Marc Madiot, although Italian team Polti are
still expressing an interest. "I recently saw Marc Madiot and a
representative of La Francaise des Jeux," Leblanc told L'Equipe (11
August), "and our contract proposals are in concordance with each other.
The communications boss of the team even phoned me today to confirm that
the contract, for two years, is finalised."

However, Leblanc was expecting a visit from Polti manager Gianluca Stanga
yesterday (11 August 95) evening to put forward a detailed proposition.
"The truth is,"Leblanc said, "Stanga has been in contact with me since last
February and I gave him my word of honour that I would reflect on his
offer." An astonishing revelation, says L'Equipe, since Leblanc was under
contract with Le Groupement for three years then. [But not that astonishing
now, since L'Equipe broke the news soon after Groupement folded! -- Roger].
A decision is expected this weekend.

L'Equipe's film of the race:

** Champion of Switzerland Felice Puttini (Refin) attacks at 41km and
breaks clear, his maximum lead is 12.19 at km95 and he stays away for
133km in all.

**ONCE sometimes helped by Festina, make the pace at the front of the
peloton. Puttini is caught at 181km. On the approach to the Jaizkibel
climb, the principal difficulty of the day, ONCE's Zulle, Mauri,
Stephens and Diaz Zabala continue to work at the front of the peloton.

**Zulle and Mauri go all out at the foot of the Jaizkibel. Thirteen
riders break clear, including Jalabert, Bruyneel, Sciandri, Museeuw,
Della Santa, Piepoli, Cenghialta and Armstrong. At 10 seconds is
another group which includes, notably, Bugno, Indurain and Dufaux.
Bugno bridges the gap near the summit and crosses it first; Indurain
doesn't get up to the front group.

**Armstrong and Leeds Classic winner Sciandri break clear on the
descent which is slippery from the humidity. They are joined by
Jalabert but lower down Sciandri punctures and falls out of the
picture. Jalabert and Armstrong get as much as 34 secs on Bugno,
Piepoli, Della Santa and Museeuw.

**Jalabert and Armstrong are caught at the 4km banner. Bugno essays an
attack but his intentions are all too clear. Della Santa counters and
makes a gap. Armstrong tries again and gets in his wheel. Behind them,
everybody sits and waits for Jalabert to make a move. He won't play so
nobody budges.

**The sprint is a formality for Armstrong who beats Della Santa by 10
metres. Jalabert winds up his sprint for third place too far out and
is outpaced by Museeuw who thus consolidates his World Cup lead.

Armand De Las Cuevas

Armand De Las Cuevas, last year's Clasica San Sebastian winner did not ride
this year's edition on Saturday. Indeed he's reduced to inactivity
following open conflict with his team, Castorama. The former French
national champion has been sanctioned by his team for "lack of
professionalism" as his employers put it, who reproach him for
indiscretions in the way he conducted himself ("ecarts de conduite") during
the Tour de France and isn't putting him in any races for an indeterminate
period.

Tour of Galicia/Tour of Limousin

The Tour of Galicia began today (14 August) and runs over five stages
until 18 August. Among those taking part are Zulle, Ugrumov, Virenque,
Mejia and Indurain. Indurain says he will probably decide on the
strength of his form in this race whether or not he will take part in
the Vuelta a Espana.
And tomorrow the Tour of Limousin stage race begins in France,
finishing on 18 August.

...and later reported:

Miguel Indurain outsprinted break companion Maaarten Den Bakker to
take today's first stage of the Tour of Galicia today (14 August),
102.5km from Ferrol to Ferrol.
Indurain and Den Bakker had been part of a break with Eleuterio
Anguita and Eros Poli the other members of which they outdistanced in
the last three climbs. Anguita finished third at 4.11 with Melchor
Mauri and Manuel Fernandez, and the peloton came in at 5.36.
