Classica San Sebastian
The early action in this 240km classic race centered around San Sabastian
was conducted by the champion of Switzerland, Felice Puttini, of Refin. He
establish a lead of over eight minutes after attacking early in the race.
This lead was cut down by a charging Once squad, with the aim of setting
Jalabert up for a victory and 50 points toward the season long world cup.
On the climb over the Jazikabel with around 50kms to go the race exploded
with several riders showing there cards. Indurain (Banesto), Jalabert
(Once), Armstrong (Motorola), Bugno, Sciandri (both MG-Technogym), Museuw,
Della Santa (both Mapei-GB) and Defaux (Festina) were all present as the
race reached the summit of this climb. These riders have all shown good
form recently with Defaux winning the Tour of Burgos, Sciandri winning last
weeks classic in Leeds, England, Indurain and Jalabert vying for rider of
the year, Bugno and Armstrong showing strongly in last weeks race in Leeds
and Armstrong having a great TdF and Leeds classic.
Several of these riders, notably Sciandri, Defaux and Jalabert accelerated
on the ascent but over the top of climb it was Jalabert, Armstrong and
Sciandri who attacked and gapped the rest of the contenders. This group was
followed at about 20sec by Museuw and several others who were inturn 20 sec
up on an Indurain lead group. Sciandri was obviously mounting a Bortalami
style attack on the World cup after a good Tdf and Jalabert was aiming to
take over the lead in this competition. Interestingly both Armstrong
(1994) and Jalabert (1991) have finished second in this race.
On the descent Sciandri punctured and nearly fell, almost taking Jalabert
with him. Armstrong lead all the way down the twisting descent showing
great skill. Sciandri was unfortunate as the time gap to the next group
meant there was no service vehicle close by. He eventually picked up the
third group on the road.
Armstrong and Jalabert worked well together and lead the next group by, at
the most, 32sec. This next group contained Bugno, Museuw, Della Santa and
a guy from Refin, Pelicioli(?) who looked to be hanging on by the skin of
his teeth doing no turns at the front. Della Santa was doing alot of work
for Museuw, his team mate and current World cup leader. Bugno was
initially apprehensive about working but then when he realised Sciandri was
not going to get back on worked as hard as the two Mapei-GB riders.
With about 10kms to go the time gap started to come down and with 8kms to
go the gap was about 20sec. This came down with about 6kms to go and the
six leaders sat up fora few seconds.
First to attack was Bugno who went on a slight rise. He was marked and the
group came together again. After a few half attacks, Della Santa went. I
think his intension was to soften legs up so that Museuw could attack. He
had worked extremely hard to bridge the initial 30 sec gap that Armstrong
and Jalabert had.
Armstrong was very aggressive and marked this break. The Refin guy tried
to bridge up but couldn't and no other riders attempted to bridge. It left
Bugno and Jalabert in a similar position to that they had been in at LBL.
If either chased they risked losing the race, but if neither chased they
both lost. Museuw was obviously not going to try and bridge even though
his weaken team mate seemed less strong than Armstrong. As the chasers
sat up Armstrong and Della Santa built up a sizable gap and were now within
a few kms of the finish.
With about 1km to go Armstrong swung left for Della Santa to come through.
The Mapei-GB rider did so and looked consigned to second already.
The sprint was easy for Armstrong who had ridden a very strong and
agressive race to finish in a time of five and a half hours. Della Santa
coasted over the line for second.
The next four riders sprinted for the points with Museuw third, extending
his lead in the World cup. Next (I think) was Jalabert then Bugno and the
Refin rider. The next group was lead home by Britains Max Sciandri who
beat Indurain narrowly.
Notes:
Last years winner, De Les Cuevas (Castorama) was absent and it didn't seem
that anyone knew where he was!
When Armstrong turned pro after the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, this was
his first pro race. He finished dead last in a rain soaked race won by
Alcala. He very nearly retired but came back the next week to take second
in The GP Zurich behind Ekimov. A tip for the future?
This race was 9th in the world cup. The remaining rounds are in Zurich,
Paris-Tours and Lombardy (I maybe wrong there).
This race and others in the World cup seem to have marked an acceptance in
the peleton of the World cup as a serious competition. Previous years won
by riders including Fondriest, Kelly and Ludwig seem to have been contested
less seriously with riders wanting to win classics that were part of the
World Cup. This year riders such as Museuw and Jalabert seem to want to
win the races but the World cup points are more of an integral part of the
racing. The Classica San Sabastian is hardly a race that Museuw would
normally be associated with.
I think the early revelation of the World Cup, Mauro Giannetti, is still
out with broken vertebrae from the Tour of Switzerland.
Sciandri, Armstrong, Museuw and Jalabert have all shown there intent to win
this competition.
